Responsibilities

The surgical First Assistant renders patient care by assisting the surgeon during operative procedures. The Assistant functions under the direction of the operating surgeon during the patient's surgical experience. The Assistant provides support to the surgeon by assisting with exposure and visualization, hemostasis, wound closure and other technical functions that will help assure a safe surgical procedure. The Assistant performs other related tasks under the direction of the circulating Nurse and reports to their designated Team Leader.

  • Helps select and assemble instruments, supplies, and equipment for procedures; maintains aseptic technique; performs counts according to policy; follow standard transmission based precautions while wearing the required apparel; demonstrates team approach; assists in maintenance of equipment and supplies and protects them when sending to Sterile Prep; provides instruments, suture, and supplies to the surgeon in an appropriate and timely manner; demonstrates knowledge of the procedure in order to anticipate the surgeon's needs; prepares sterile field and arranges instruments in a timely manner; performs patient care tasks that may be delegated by nursing personnel in a safe and timely manner; assists in putting away equipment and preparing for the following procedures; cleans and stocks OR suite at the end of the shift.

  • Follows standard departmental and hospital policies and procedures for surgical intervention while complying with the preferences of the surgeon.

  • Position and prep patients prior to surgical procedures, ensure clear visibility for the surgeon by using instruments such as retractors and sponges, assist in control of bleeding, close surgical site using sutures or staples, cauterizing wounds and vessels, packing sponges, placing clamps and sutures, apply direct pressure on veins and tissue, aid in patient suction, drainage and irrigation, and properly dressing wounds.

Qualifications

Required:

Associates Degree

Certified Surgical First Assist Certification through either ABSA, NBSTSA, or NSAA

Pay Range

$31.23 - $45.29 /hour
