Respiratory Therapist Full Time

Assess treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders. Assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check and operate equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Graduate of NBRC/Accredited program for Respiratory Therapy (Associates or Bachelor's Degree).
2. Registration with NBRC and Licensure with the W.V.B.O.R.C.
3. BLS,ACLS,PALS and NRP within 6 months of hire

EXPERIENCE:

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Assess the patient/client through history, systems review, and tests and measures upon orders from the physician. Plans appropriate treatment based upon the physician orders and the evaluation; establishes goals, methods of treatment and the patient's potential.
2. Set up the appropriate equipment, select and measure the proper medications if applicable and administer treatments as ordered by the physician: ex: oxygen administration, humidity therapy, airway management, resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, postural drainage procedures and chest physiotherapy, intermittent positive pressure ventilation, pressure support ventilation, BIPAP, CPAP, POSITION SUMMARY: Assess treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders. Assume primary responsibility for all respiratory care modalities, including the supervision of respiratory therapy technicians. Initiate and conduct therapeutic procedures; maintain patient records; and select, assemble, check and operate equipment. nebulizer therapy, metered dose inhaler therapy, closed atmospheric and respiratory monitoring, pharmacology respiratory care.
3. Performs treatments according to the established plan, utilizing appropriate procedures, equipment and techniques within the scope of Respiratory Therapy. 4. Monitors environmental control systems (humidification, etc) and other types of respiratory entrainment systems. Delivers and sets up equipment and monitors patients on continuous ventilation and documents as per departmental policies and procedures. Provides nasotracheal and endotracheal intubation when required following all departmental and national guidelines and policies and procedures, and document accordingly. Performs nasotracheal and tracheal (E.T.T. and Trach) suctioning per policy and procedures and document performance of said procedures per departmental policies and procedures. Performs trach and endotracheal care as needed per policy and procedures and documents the performance of the procedure according to department policies and procedures.
5. Assist in the surgical suite as requested with C-Sections and bronchoscopes. Assist in any emergencies in the surgical suite requiring Respiratory expertise. 6. Documents in the medical records according to established criteria, including initial evaluations, progress reports, and discharge summaries.
7. Possesses the ability to recognize basic deviation from the norm regarding physical, mental and psychological status; documents these, along with objective treatment plan accordingly.
8. Recognize medical problems and report to a physician. Apply emergency protocols as needed or alert supervisor, other supporting staff and the physician per departmental policies and procedures. In the event of cardiovascular and pulmonary arrest, proceed to the location, perform proper endotracheal/nasopharyngeal intubation and assist the physician and supporting staff with the patient's airway per departmental policies and procedures.
9. Perform arterial blood gas collection and analysis, calibrate the equipment, and maintain quality control, proficiencies and preventive maintenance, along with trouble shooting and remedial action of the arterial blood gas machines. Perform and monitor parallel testing between the arterial blood gas systems, as well as monitor critical values and report accordingly, to assure consistency of results, and to take remedial action if the results are not satisfactory per departmental policies and procedures.
10. As requested by the Director and facility specific the RRT will cross train to administer diagnostic procedures to include Complete pulmonary function tests (all aspects of set up, procedure, report results), Holters (all aspects of set up, scan, report results), Grade Exercise Testing (all aspects of set up, performance, report results), Stress Test (all aspects of set up, performance, report results), Electrocardiographs (all aspects of set up, performance, report results), all other new procedures as added or requested by the Department Director.
11. Develops measurable and realistic goals that are in accordance with the diagnosis, prognosis and findings.
12. Re-evaluates patients, assesses their progress and makes recommendations as to their disposition.
13. Educates the patients and/or caregivers about findings of the evaluation, established goals, methods of treatment and the patient's potential. Instructs patients and/or family members in home programs including injury preventions and the use of assistive devices, adaptive equipment and other respiratory equipment.
14. Communicates with other health care professionals, including patient referral sources, verbally and in writing and participation in multidisciplinary rounds.
15. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of all modalities with sufficient knowledge of indications and contraindications. Appropriately and efficiently implements and performs goals directed therapeutic treatments.
16. Is readily available for questions and concerns from students and volunteers.
17. Ensures the facilities and equipment for patient services are maintained to promote comfort, efficiency and safety for patients and staff. This includes proper cleaning, disinfecting and correct calibration of equipment.
18. Discontinue therapy as ordered and remove equipment from the patient rooms in a timely manner. To receive equipment and disassemble, clean, disinfect/sterilize and dry, reassemble, and package all equipment in a timely manner. Also to calibrate and test in preparation for patient usage in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
19. Obtains work related continuing education as required for professional licensure and certifications.
20. Remains current and responsive to changes in healthcare delivery, standards established by professional organizations, regulatory and accrediting bodies and the needs of the organization. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and current professional literature.
