The incumbent must demonstrate the knowledge and skills at the novice level necessary to provide care that is relevant to the patient(s) under their care, as well as apply principles of growth and development over the life span. The incumbent also must possess the ability to assess and interpret patient data needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs. This role provides professional nursing care for patients in an inpatient hospital setting.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1. Current unencumbered licensure with the WV Board of Registered Professional Nurses, or appropriate state board where serviceswill be provided, as a registered professional nurse OR Current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
2. The Graduate nurse must obtain licensure within 60 days of hire - Licenses must be obtained before expiration date of the temporary permit unless deemed not possibleas a resultof the temporary closure of NCLEX testing centers due to circumstances such as pandemic.
3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
1. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing the need for employees to manually lift patients, and limit safe patient handling to 35 pounds. All transfers, lifts and re-positioningwill be completedutilizing the lift equipment and/or other patient handling aids as indicated by the patient's profile and appropriate algorithms.
2. Heavy/Hard work: Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40+lbs.
3. Visual acuity must be within normal range.
4. Hearing within normal range is required (i.e. to assess breath sounds, bowel sounds, apical pulse, monitors, etc.)

The CAPE program is a system-wide clinical advancement program (clinical ladder) to enhance professional development, provide a reward system for quality clinical performance, promote quality nursing, and improve job satisfaction for inpatient direct care nurses.
To apply for the next level, the CAPE nurse must meet the requirements of their current level. They must also meet the required years of nursing experience, degree, and certification to apply for the next level. In addition, nurses who are approved for levels 3, 4, or 5 must complete and submit five competencies on an annual basis to maintain their current level.

- All new grads enter at Level one with a diploma, ADN, BSN, or higher
Level 2
- Meets requirements for previous level
- One year of experience.
Level 3
- Meets requirements for previous levels
- Four years of experience, plus one specialty certification
Level 4
- Available to those with a BSN or higher

Additional Job Description:
The Neuro Step Down Unit has an exciting, unique, and intellectually challenging work environment, specializing in the care of neurosciences patients. The bed capacity is 29, with 23 Step Down beds and 6 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) beds. The nurse to patient ratio is 1:3 with flexible staffing to 1:2 for the first 24 hours after TNK administration for acute ischemic stroke. We specialize in stroke, epilepsy, brain tumor, neuromuscular disease, craniotomy, traumatic brain injury, and spine surgery; however, our unit receives a nice mix of high acuity patients from a variety of medical-surgical services, providing new nurses with a well-rounded experience. Neuro Step Down patients require specialized care, continuous cardiac monitoring, and management of external ventricular drains, lumbar drains, and IV drips to manage blood pressure and cerebral pressure. The EMU is a fascinating clinical area where diagnostic studies are performed through collaboration between RNs, EEG techs, and Epileptologists. The EMU on 10 East is a central component of the only NAEC Level 4 Epilepsy Center in the state, providing 24-hour video EEG surveillance to aid in the diagnosis and management of seizure disorders. The 10 East nursing staff is an integral part of the high-performing Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute's Comprehensive Stroke Center program.
10 East provides exceptional learning opportunities with a wide variety of acutely ill patients; a comprehensive orientation program, and a supportive work environment for newly hired RNs and graduate nurses. Orientation is 11 weeks long and includes specialized training both at the bedside and in the classroom to ensure our nurses have the skills and knowledge needed to provide high quality, evidence-based care for neuro patients. We are proud of the number of neuro- and stroke-certified nurses on 10 East; our involvement in the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses (AANN), our representation annually at national nursing conferences, and the path to professional development fostered through peer and leadership support.
