POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for producing high quality X-ray images by conducting exams in a safe and efficient manner. Verifies and follows referring providers’ orders while remaining in compliance with the Imaging Sciences departmental policies. Possesses a sound understanding of human anatomy as well as x-ray positioning and the use if immobilization devices when warranted SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION EXERCISED: Please refer to the Career ladder MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED: Systems: Medical record (eRecord), PACS, Radiology Information System (RIS), patient transport, communication systems, web paging, telephone/fax, printers. Equipment: Wheelchairs, Stretchers, Patient beds, Portables, C-arms, Xray/Fluoro rooms, patient transfer assist devices (slider boards, lifts, hover mats), Point of Care Testing (POCT), Image processing equipment (CR processors). TYPICAL DUTIES: Prepares room and patient per order, properly sets up equipment, position patients, and determine proper exposure factors in order to produce a high-quality image. Utilizes electronic patient information systems to verify patient name, date, appropriate exam, and any special exam specific comments from the provider. Understands and practices the Dual patient identifier procedure. Maintains appropriate supplies in the x-ray rooms Produces a diagnostic, high quality image for interpretation by the Radiologist Transfers patients to and from imaging tables using assistive devices such as ARJO lift, transfer boards, hover mats. Maintains accurate patient record keeping by properly identifying images and assuring images are sent to the PACS system correctly. Completes and bills for studies accurately At an advanced level, may train new employees or lead day to day work activities. QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of formal training in an approved School of Radiologic Technology. Maintains current NYS licensure and ARRT certification with CE credits as required. Career Ladder: The three bands within this position are differentiated by level of independence, supervision required, ability to precept new employees in the use of all equipment, and the ability to lead and meet established departmental goals. Band One (I): Entry Level Radiologic Technologist – Technologists new to URMC Imaging Department who require training as well as regular direct supervision or guidance from a more senior technologist. This generally involves orientation to the Departments infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures and routines. During this period the Technologists must demonstrate an ability to progress towards proficient and competent performance of required tasks of a Radiologic Technologist. Success within this band requires independent responsibility for performing general section studies in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated paper and computer work while providing high quality images for radiologist interpretation. Band Two (II): Competent Radiologic Technologist – With minimal supervision, demonstrates proficiency and competence in all aspects of job responsibilities and expectations, and consistently demonstrates initiative to assist in other areas of the department when the need arises. Able to work with student technologists to sign off on their required competencies while rotating through UR Imaging. Requires minimal supervision. Demonstrates consistent attention to detail when performing all imaging exams. Completes all associated paper and computer work for discharging patients with appropriate post procedure instructions. Additional duties may include working on special projects, such as new equipment evaluations and assisting in the design of areas where clinical equipment will be installed, or assignment to departmental committees. Band Two status requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience in an Imaging Sciences setting, with at least 6 months dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department. Band Three (III): Advanced Radiologic Technologist – In addition to the responsibilities of a Radiologic Technologist Band Two, serves as a preceptor in the on-boarding of newly hired Technologists directly orienting to equipment, imaging routines and procedures, computer programs and software, as well as departmental and hospital policies. A Band Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and acts as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Directly assists in the mentoring of newer Technologists by providing one-on-one assistance in conjunction with the Supervising Technologist. Possesses subject matter expertise in several different areas that could include, but not limited to myelograms, specialty OR cases, specialty GIGU cases, the ability to competently operate a variety of different vendor platforms and perform departmental QA procedures. Able to effectively troubleshoot issues that arise within the department and deal with accordingly. A Band Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and act as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Able to represent the department on various committees such as safety, quality, and operations groups. Takes responsibility to prepare the department and staff for NYS and TJC evaluations. Facilitates new policies and procedures to staff. Serves as a resource to the supervisors for special projects as assigned. Select Band Three Technologists may designated as Leads to support operations on various shifts. Leads may either assist their shift supervisor, or in the absence of a supervisor, determine workflow and staff schedule/assignments. Leads may also provide performance evaluation input to the section supervisor. Band Three status minimally requires 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as a Radiologic Technologist in a clinical or hospital environment with 1 year dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department preferred. To be eligible for advancement consideration, technologist must be in good standing. Readiness for movement in the bands is assessed by the General X-Ray manager and supervisor upon successful demonstration of knowledge and task proficiency as defined in the career ladder. Movement to a higher band is based on departmental need requires final approval from the Imaging Sciences Clinical Director of Operations in collaboration with Human Resources. Employees hired externally with appropriate credentials and relevant experience may enter the career bands as a Band Three to serve in a Lead role if the need exists within the department.
