Description
The Asset Management division of Hennepin County's Transportation Operation department is seeking an Engineering Technician or Assistant Engineering Technician to work as part of a team to deliver maintenance projects with opportunities for technical growth through training and working with other experienced professionals. This role encompasses a blend of fieldwork and office-based tasks. You'll be conducting thorough inspections of drainage structures and pavement conditions. Additionally, your duties will focus on plan production and data input.
- Engineering Technician, Assistant (Level I): $48,183.23 - $66,608.86 Annually
- Engineering Technician (Level II): $60,857.51- $80,963.49 Annually
Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, MN 55340 (there is no public transportation to the facility), in a field environment within Hennepin County and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with flexible hours between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire.

In these positions, you will:
- For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I):
- Read and interpret construction plans and technical specifications.
- Observe construction activities for compliance to the project plans and specifications.
- Assist in asset inspection, data collection and documentation in the field.
- Assist in the preparation of plan development and check item quantities.
- For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II - including the above duties):
- Read, interpret and understand construction plans and technical specifications.
- Observe construction activities for compliance to the project plans and specifications.
- Assist in asset inspection, data collection and documentation in the field.
- Prepare plan sheets and verify item quantities.
- Conduct inspections for culverts, curb, and pavement by collecting field data and documenting in ArcGIS, ICON (Infrastructure Consultant) and ATOM (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
- May direct, train, and check the work of technicians in lower-level classifications.
- For hire as an Assistant Engineering Technician (Level I)
- One of the following:
- Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program.
- One or more years of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
- One year of experience analyzing numerical data using computer software applications, or developing and maintaining computerized information system applications.
- Thirty (30) college semester credits in mathematics, geography, computer science, or engineering related technical courses.
- One of the following:
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a
- Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- For hire as an Engineering Technician (Level II)
- One of the following:
- Three years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work.
- Three years or more of college or technical school credits in a related engineering or computer science field.
- Current certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST), Level 2.
- One of the following:
- A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a
- Ability to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds; climb up and down slopes; work outdoors, and around traffic in all weather conditions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Certification(s) from the MnDOT Technical Certification Program.
- Experience:
- Utilizing computer software, such as CAD (OpenRoads, InRoads, Geopak, Civil 3D or equivalent), GIS, spreadsheets, or databases
- Engineering design, survey, permitting processes, and inspection work.
- Using terrain surface and/or roadway geometric design using roadway design software.
- Knowledge of:
- Math functions such as arithmetic, algebra, and geometry.
- Construction equipment, materials, and methods.
- Ability to:
- Communicate with staff at all levels of the organization.
- Read and understand MnDot standard design manuals and technical memos, construction plans, specifications and other civil engineering job-related forms.
- Schedule, prioritize, and balance several tasks/projects.
