Summary

A Physical Education (PE) teacher is responsible for developing and implementing physical education programs to promote physical fitness, skill development, and healthy lifestyles in students. The primary role of a PE teacher is to educate and guide students in various physical activities and sports while fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

This is a 10-month exempt position:

As a PE teacher you will:

  • Planning and Curriculum Development:
    • Designing and developing age-appropriate physical education curricula based on educational standards and learning objectives.
    • Creating lesson plans that include a variety of activities and exercises to enhance students' motor skills, coordination, endurance, and overall physical fitness.
  • Incorporating sports, games, gymnastics, dance, and other activities that promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play.
  • Instruction and Demonstration:
  • Delivering engaging and interactive physical education lessons that cater to diverse student needs and abilities.
  • Demonstrating proper techniques, skills, and safety measures related to different physical activities.
  • Providing clear instructions, feedback, and guidance to students to help them improve their performance and enhance their understanding of physical education concepts.
  • Equipment and Facility Management:
  • Ensuring the availability and proper maintenance of equipment, sports gear, and facilities required for physical education classes.
  • Organizing and setting up equipment for various activities, ensuring a safe and organized learning environment.
  • Conducting regular safety inspections and implementing appropriate safety protocols to prevent accidents or injuries during physical education classes.
  • Assessment and Evaluation:
  • Assessing and evaluating students' physical abilities, progress, and skill development through observation, tests, and other assessment methods.
  • Providing constructive feedback and individualized recommendations to help students set goals and improve their physical fitness levels.
  • Maintaining accurate records of student attendance, performance, and assessment results.
  • Health Promotion and Education:
  • Promoting the importance of physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, and the benefits of regular exercise to students.
  • Educating students about the fundamentals of nutrition, injury prevention, and overall wellness.
  • Encouraging students to adopt healthy habits and make informed choices that positively impact their physical and mental well-being.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborating with other teachers, staff, and parents to ensure a comprehensive and holistic approach to students' education and well-being.
  • Communicating regularly with parents/guardians to provide updates on students' progress, behavior, and any concerns related to physical education.
  • Participating in professional development activities, conferences, or workshops to stay updated on current trends and best practices in physical education.
  • Extracurricular Activities:
  • Organizing and supervising extracurricular sports teams, intramural activities, or physical education-related events.
  • Coaching and training students for competitive sports events and coordinating their participation in interscholastic competitions, if applicable.
Overall, a PE teacher plays a vital role in promoting physical fitness, teaching sportsmanship, fostering teamwork, and instilling a lifelong love for physical activity in students.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Two years of teaching experience in a high-need, high performing school and evidence of impact on student learning in that setting (Preferred)
