Environment Health Specialist

Hours: 8:00 - 5:00 Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week
The responsibilities of the Environmental Health Specialist (EHS) will be to promote public health through education, surveillance, consultation and enforcement of state environmental health laws and regulations. The EHS will protect public health and safety through preventative measures designed to identify and control the spread of diseases. The EHS will evaluate environmental health conditions through the observation, inspection and grading of facilities such as (but not limited to) restaurants, meat markets, food and drink stands, institutions, school cafeterias, residential care/group homes and push carts/mobile food units.

- Graduation from a four year college or university with 30 semester hours of coursework in the physical, biological, life, health or natural sciences and two years of experience in Environmental Health; or four-year or Master's Degree in Environmental Health from a program which is accredited by the National Accreditation Council for Environmental Health Curricula of the National Environmental Health Association and one year experience in Environmental Health
- Authorization in FLI and /or Childcare/School Sanitation is preferred
Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
- Must be able to gather, consolidate, analyze and evaluate facts to arrive at conclusions and develop recommended actions
- Possess strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing to a variety of people, answering questions and explaining information or decisions
- Accurately write narrative or investigative reports
- Effectively gain cooperation from public and private sector personnel; and must have skill in using resource materials and current research, maintain and use files and public records
- Able to perform environmental investigations and regulation development
- Gain voluntary compliance with regulations
