POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Special Education Nurse-LPN
SUPERVISOR: Special Education Administrator
PAYMENT RATE: According to Educational Support Staff Salary Schedule
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current Kansas LPN License.
- Diploma from an accredited LPN program.
- Current certification in BLS.
- Experience in pediatrics and school setting preferred.
- Must have knowledge and ability to use health equipment and computer applications.
- Maintain current TB testing as required by Health Department regulations (after employment offer is made).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Serves as a health advocate for the pupil.
- May support adaptation of classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
- Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students for the purpose of maintaining students' personal hygiene.
- Provides classroom level leadership to promote healthy attitudes among pupils and teachers and a safe and healthy school environment.
- Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
- Encourages, coordinates, and participates in programs of health education through individual pupil/parent consultation and classroom participation.
- Facilitates the implementation of Board of Education health related policies.
- Assesses and implements care for pupils according to Board of Education policy, state School Accreditation standards, and Nurse Practice Act regulations.
- Designs and implements, within approved procedures, a health appraisal program, including dental inspections, vision and hearing screening.
- Collaborates with other school personnel, including administrators, support staff and teachers, toward the promotion of child health and its optimal interaction with education.
- Counsels with pupils, parents, and school personnel concerning health needs or health concerns of pupils.
- Works closely with family regarding the pupil's health needs, facilitating communication and health between the school, parents, and the pupil's health care provider.
- Participates as a member of the Individualized Education Plan for the assigned pupil(s). Interprets pupil health status and, as indicated, plans, provides, and monitors related health services.
- Is knowledgeable of community and health resources and assists parents to utilize these resources.
- Assists in providing emergency care for pupil(s) and school personnel in case of injury or sudden illness until a lawful custodian assumes responsibility.
- Ensure documentation of medication and maintain, dispense, and secure all student medication according to policy for medication administration.
- Ensure first aid and health supplies are available and inform Special Education Administration of any needed supplies.
- Ensure a high level of confidentiality regarding student and staff information in order to remain in compliance with legal requirements and to maintain a professional work environment.
- Demonstrates dependability, promptness, and regular attendance in order to establish consistent routines, promote teamwork, and guarantee instructional continuity.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.
- Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.
- Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.
- Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.
- Some knowledge of the school organization and community served.
- Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.
- Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.
- Ability to develop positive working relationships.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Must occasionally work in a noisy and crowded environment, with numerous interruptions.
- May be required to wear protective garments and/or gloves for exposure control under limited circumstances.
- Ability to move, lift, pull or push heavy objects.
- At will
- Up to a 40-hour work week.
- Employee may be required to ride transportation with pupil(s).
