The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) functions within the nurse midwife scope of practice, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary care team to independently manage patient care across various settings with a focus on preconception care, pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, care of the newborn, family planning and the gynecological services of well women.

Typical Schedule:

1.0 FTE – 4 clinic days, including one evening per week and rotating OB call

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Midwifery, required.
  • Active Wisconsin Nurse Midwife, RN and APNP license or the ability to obtain, required.
  • Active national board certification in nurse midwifery, required.
  • Two years of midwifery experience, preferred.
Responsibilities include:
  • Assessing, diagnosing, treating, managing, educating, and coordinating care for patients and families.
  • Confirming and dating pregnancy.
  • Providing prenatal and postpartum care.
  • Caring for women during childbirth including monitoring the mother and fetus during labor, assessing labor progress, managing complications, assisting with pain management, performing episiotomies if needed, and delivering the newborn and placenta.
  • Providing education for new parents on infant care.
  • Supporting new mothers who are breastfeeding with education and training.
  • Preparing pregnant women for what to expect during the birthing process.
  • Performing preventive health screenings and tests.
  • Diagnosing and treating gynecological disorders such as sexually transmitted diseases and infertility.
  • Providing care within their scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, licensing regulations, OMC policy, privileges and written agreements between the collaborating physician(s) and nurse midwife.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Clinical Knowledge
  • Demonstrates knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, presentation, and epidemiology of medical conditions.
  • Performs history and physical assessments of patients that are accurate, complete, concise, relevant and appropriate for age, gender and clinical problem.
  • Orders appropriate diagnostic studies and correctly interprets the results.
  • Utilizes critical thinking to synthesize and analyze collected data.
  • Develops, implements, evaluates and alters the plan of care as needed.
  • Counsels and educates patients and families.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in procedural skills pertinent to practice area.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, concise and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.

  • Provides care that is patient and family centered, compassionate, appropriate and effective.
  • Facilitates consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team.
