Dover Chemical Corporation is seeking an experienced electrical and controls professional at our Hammond, IN location to fill the role of Process Control Engineer.

The Role - Process Control Engineer

The primary responsibility of the Process Control Engineer is the development of control systems including continuous control loops and sequential batch control algorithms. An important element of the position is to develop, test and install PLC and control software as part of an automated, high volume 24/7 production environment. Key responsibilities of the job include the design, specification, installation, and troubleshooting of process control hardware and software from the field device to the operator interface. The Process Control Engineer uses computer modeling and simulations as needed to design and evaluate processes and operating systems for the manufacturing of products. The Process Control Engineer is the "point person" for all automation-hardware and software - and will collaborate and direct activities regarding instrumentation and electrical systems with Engineering and Operations. When necessary, he/she will supervise automation, control, and electrical contractors for various projects. Secondarily, the Process Control Engineer is the site IT contact, coordinating with the Dover, Ohio site IT in the troubleshooting of site PC's and PC network.

The Process Control Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience
  • B.S. Degree in Electrical or Chemical Engineering with substantial electrical training/experience. Advanced degree is a plus.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with control systems configured using ladder logic, function block diagrams, and structured function.
  • Familiarity with the networking hardware and software to maintain a distributed system of controllers and workstations.
  • Experience with networked Allen-Bradley PLC's.
  • Experience in the chemical, plastic, petrochemical, gas/oil, pharmaceuticals, pulp/paper, power/utilities, and/or paint coatings industry.
  • Experience working in a PSM regulated facility is a plus.
  • Experience with process instrumentation, discrete and continuous actuators, and single and variable speed motors.
Technical Knowledge
  • Advanced knowledge of the following:
  1. Control for batch and continuous processes.
  2. Cascaded Control Schema's.
  3. Rockwell SLC 500, PLC-5, CompactLogix, Control Logix system design and programming.
  4. Compatible IO Systems
  5. GE Digital iFIX HMI/SCADA system design and programming


  • Strong PLC logic and programming background with Allen Bradley PLC's
  • Ability to design and install hardware in an Ethernet PLC Network.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience with computer workstations in an industrial environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with continuous feedback control applications, including tuning, cascaded controllers, feedforward and constraint controllers.
  • Knowledge and experience with sequential operations, in particular batch sequential logic and interlock/permissive logic.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in design, development, configuration, integration of process control solutions to control and optimize chemical processes cost effectively and safely.
  • Knowledge and experience in the design and specification of instrumentation and electrical equipment in compliance with applicable codes and standards in an environment that includes flammable and/or hazardous chemicals.
  • Experience designing and specifying industrial electrical systems, including: power distribution, transformers, UPS, drives, switchgear, lighting, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with industrial instrumentation and instrument architecture.
  • Capable of developing and implementing standard engineering practices.
  • Functional knowledge of Windows PC configuration, networking, and troubleshooting.
  • Project engineering experience a plus, including project scheduling, costing, and budgeting, equipment specification and purchase, and contractor scoping and management.

  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Work evenings, weekends and holidays on site premises when necessary and/or required.
  • Accept and respond to telephone call inquires when not on site premises.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of MS Office tools.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
  • Must be able to work around hazardous chemicals and exposure to dust.
  • Ability to regularly work in and be exposed to outside weather elements (i.e. rain, snow, cold, heat).
  • Physical ability to regularly work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouch or squat, twist, stooping and standing.
  • Must be able to lift 40 pounds.
