Under general supervision by the Assistant Dean and the Sr. Academic Advisor, this position supports student academic planning and routine advising for Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts students. This position supports the mission of the BCLA Academic Advising Center by helping students navigate academic options and explore academic opportunities, connect to faculty and professional advising resources, in support of meeting students' academic goals in relation to University requirements. Will direct students towards College and campus resources that will enhance their ability to be academically successful, and implement cross-functional collaboration within BCLA and with other units to increase student success. Some hybrid work arrangements are possible, but incumbents must be able to spend considerable time in the Dean's Office on a regular schedule (including M-F 8am-5pm) as determined by the Assistant Dean. Some evening and weekend (remote) hours may be part of the full-time work schedule.
Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities
Advising and Promoting Student Success
- Help students explore academic opportunities, identify goals, and implement plans to reach those goals through individual meetings and strategic programs. Maintain current and comprehensive notes on student interactions
- Engage with a community of advising and academic support personnel, including graduate assistants and undergraduate peer advisors through training, seminars, programs, events, and related initiatives; help train and mentor graduate assistants and undergraduate peer advisors on all BCLA advising procedures and processes;
- Maintain up-to-date understanding of curricular requirements for all BCLA academic major and minor programs, as well as the Core Curriculum; maintain familiarity with the academic programs and requirements in the other schools and colleges; show students how to assess their degree progress through graduation.
- Interact with students through one-on-one and group meetings (in person and through zoom), and through timely, effective, and thoroughly accurate email, and phone communications; help staff BCLA virtual office hours and workshops;
- Understand explicitly and be accountable for the correct application and communication of LMU and BCLA academic policies (including FERPA), deadlines, and procedures; refer difficult cases to a senior advisor or the Assistant Dean; Utilize Banner, Prowl, and DegreeWorks to monitor individual students and cohorts of students and help identify roadblocks to student retention, persistence, and success;
- Work with others to create web-based resources for undeclared students regarding issues such as such as prerequisites, deadlines for declaring, and other academic opportunities;
- Support Sr. Academic Advisors and Assistant Dean with all advising/academic planning related events such as orientations for new students, events for prospective students, and annual commencement exercises as needed; assist in routine outreach targeting cohorts of students (e.g., first-year and transfer students, those returning from study abroad, graduating seniors, students on probation, etc.);
- Participate in BCLA's Academic Support and Students Success initiatives (e.g., graduation/degree clearance process, probation/at-risk student support, transfer course approval process, etc.). Help review and monitor student advising records, including degree audits, degree checks, transcripts, and student registration records; keep updated records and notes in student files.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requisite Qualifications
- Typically a Bachelor Degree in one of the liberal arts disciplines, or in education, social work, or related field or equivalent experience. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy and systems/technology changes.
- Minimum 1 year of experience working in academic support setting or student services; M.A. or progress towards an M.A. and experience in higher education environments is preferred.
- Preferred candidates will have demonstrated knowledge in the areas of: academic advising, curricula, and general administrative functions in higher education. Candidates should have an understanding of the benefits of a liberal arts education and a strong desire to assist undergraduate students with their academic planning.
- Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral). Candidate will be expected to answer students' email and phone communications effectively and efficiently, as well as meet individually with students and to provide accurate and timely information at all times. Candidate should also possess excellent time management and project management skills, as well as the ability to navigate high workload periods with grace.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Ability to work well independently and be accountable for completing assigned work; ability and enthusiasm for working collaboratively with faculty and other university constituents.
- Demonstrated computer competency and preferably knowledgeable of word processing systems, Excel, Banner, and other common university systems. Ability to manage organizational, policy, and technology change is essential.
