I) Job Purpose

The Mental Health Peer Specialist provides recovery-focused services to individuals in MHMR programs, adhering to TAC requirements. They offer recovery and wellness support, mentoring, and advocacy in both group and individual settings. Drawing from their personal recovery experience, they teach the value of recovery, model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies, and foster positive relationships with support resources. The specialist develops and implements educational, support, and affiliation groups tailored to individual needs and preferences, while assisting clients in efficiently utilizing community resources and natural supports.

II) Essential Functions

A) Facilitate diverse affiliation and self-help groups, developing meetings based on identified needs and providing emotional and affiliation support to individuals.

B) Engage individuals based on their receptivity and needs, introducing peer services, assisting with orientation, and using personal recovery experience to establish rapport and build relationships.

C) Assist individuals in determining recovery goals, coaching them in the use of community/natural supports, and exploring beneficial options for recovery and stability.

D) Support MHMR and Peer Support mission and values while meeting individual needs, providing consistent information according to policies, and handling conflicts constructively.

E) Recognize and respond appropriately to crisis situations, offering support consistent with recovery philosophy emphasizing peer and natural support.

F) Participate actively in recovery team meetings, providing input from the perspective of individuals in peer services and offering recovery education to employees.

G) Complete and maintain all required agency and program training, meet regularly with Certified Peer Specialist Supervisor for professional development, and submit accurate and timely documentation.

III) Knowledge of Laws, Regulations, Policies/Procedures, Skills, and Abilities

A) Knowledge of Texas Administrative Code and client confidentiality laws.

B) Knowledge of SSI/Medicaid and SSDI/Medicare eligibility requirements.

C) Proficiency in recovery and peer support principles, including personal resources for mental illness recovery.

D) Understanding of mental health and substance use practices, with ability to interact comfortably with staff, families, and individuals with mental illness and addictions.

E) Commitment to ethics, cultural competence, and maintaining professional boundaries.

F) Experience with local community support services and ability to navigate and advocate through various systems.

G) Capability to utilize personal mental health experiences to help others.

H) Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish trusting relationships with peers and work collaboratively.

I) Effective organizational, time management, and self-motivation skills, with ability to work autonomously.

J) Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).

K) Ability to plan, carry out assignments, and accept constructive feedback.

IV) Internal & External Customer Service

A) This position requires extensive internal and external contacts. The employee will accomplish this with advanced written and verbal skills.

B) Must demonstrate compassion, trauma-informed care, and safety practices including suicide safe care

V) Travel

A) Adhere to MHMR Mileage and Travel reimbursement policy and any other aspect regarding travel.

B) This position requires routine travel within Tarrant County, including frequent visits to agency program sites, and may attend overnight training.
