Position: Grant Writer

Full Range of Position: $35.00 to $45.50 per hour (Depending on Education and Experience)

On-site in Ukiah, CA or Hybrid Preferred, Remote (for CA Residents Only) Possible with Supervisor Approval

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Grant Writer plays a pivotal role in ensuring the financial sustainability of our programs and initiatives. This position is responsible for identifying and securing funding opportunities by crafting compelling grant proposals and effectively managing the grant submission process. The Grant Writer has a strong background in writing and research, with experience in grant writing for nonprofit organizations. Under direction of the CEO, the Grant Writer collaborates closely with program staff and leadership to gather necessary information, develop budgets, and ensure compliance with grant requirements. Additionally, the Grant Writer builds and maintains relationships with funders, provides strategic input on fundraising goals, and stays informed on industry trends and best practices. A strong attention to detail and an understanding of the community action and nonprofit space are required in this role.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Research and identify potential grant opportunities from government agencies, foundations, corporations, and other funding sources and maintain a comprehensive calendar of grant deadlines and submission requirements.
  • Write, edit, and submit high-quality grant proposals and reports that align with NCO's Vision and program objectives.
  • Under direction of the CEO, collaborate with program staff to gather necessary information and data for proposals.
  • Develop budgets and financial narratives in coordination with the finance team.
  • Track the status of submitted proposals and follow up with funders as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of all grant submissions and outcomes.
  • Ensure compliance with all grant requirements and reporting deadlines.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with current and prospective funders.
  • Assist in organizing site visits and meetings with funders.
  • Participate in the development of fundraising strategies and goals.
  • Provide input on potential new programs and initiatives based on funding opportunities.
  • Communicate effectively with program staff, leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and present reports on grant activity to the CEO and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Stay current with trends and best practices in grant writing and fundraising.
  • Attend relevant workshops, conferences, and training sessions.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience:
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited school in English, Communications, Nonprofit Management, or a related field OR an equivalent combination of related education and recent relevant experience is required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in grant writing within the nonprofit sector is required.
  • Proven track record of securing grants from government agencies, foundations, and corporations.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of grant writing and fundraising.
  • State and federal grant regulations and requirements.
  • Current trends and best practices in nonprofit fundraising.
Ability to:
  • Exhibit exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Conduct thorough research and demonstrate strong analytical abilities.
  • Maintain excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Utilize Microsoft Office Suite and grant management databases proficiently.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Build and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with funders and stakeholders.
  • Bilingual ability (Spanish/English) is preferred.
Necessary Special Skills & Requirements:
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including occasional weekends and evenings as is needed to meet the demands and responsibilities of the position.
  • Must be able to travel regularly throughout a specified region or County area.
  • For work-related driving, must have a valid California driver's license, a verifiable good driving record, and access to a vehicle with insurance that covers the employee as a driver OR reliable transportation with proof of automobile insurance.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, listen, communicate clearly, and may be required to supervise staff or volunteers as assigned.
  • The employee frequently is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, use manual and automatic office equipment, and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; bend; reach down and stretch overhead; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds unassisted and may occasionally move and lift heavier materials with assistance using ergonomic guidelines.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The ability to travel during the day and/or night, sometimes long distance - possession of a valid California Driver's License and access to an insured vehicle is required.
  • Interaction and contact with outside agencies, vendors, funders, volunteers, donors, and contributors is a frequent aspect of this job.
  • The employee will regularly use computers and computer printers, telephones, and other similar electronic office equipment.
  • The environment can be noisy and includes the comings and goings of small children and their families.
