Position Summary:

We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our team at Fingerhut, responsible for predictive analytics and innovation. Fingerhut is a market-leading FinTech. As a Data Scientist for Credit, you will be at the forefront of delivering advanced analytics solutions and machine learning models across the Credit organization. You will focus on utilizing data from multiple sources to discover new customer insights, drive credit communications, tailor the customer experience, and ultimately drive revenue. You will be an expert for the Credit organization on predictive modeling, customer analytics, statistical methodologies, and testing and measurement.

This role is based out of our Eden Prairie, MN head office within our hybrid environment that has team members come into the office 3 days a week.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and/or implement machine learning models for predictive purposes.
  • Validate models for roll-out and analyze the performance of existing models.
  • Assess the usefulness of new data sources, transformations, and modeling techniques.
  • Perform high quality, data driven statistical inference.
  • Mine large datasets in multiple databases to draw patterns and inferences to build models and arm leaders with information that will help make business decisions.
  • Support end-users to design strategies based on newly developed machine learning models.
  • Find new areas of opportunity for Credit to utilize predictive models or other analytic solutions.
  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Information Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Mining, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Econometrics, or other technology/quantitative/hard science program.
  • 4+ years of hands on experience in data science and/or analytics
  • Experience in one of the following: Python, R, Spark, Scala, SQL, or other analytical/mathematical/statistical programming environment.
  • Hands on experience with information retrieval from high dimensional data, dimensionality reduction and feature extraction.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of supervised and/or unsupervised model building techniques is a plus, especially one of these machine learning methodologies, such as: neural networks, extreme gradient boosting (XG Boost), support vector machines (SVM), gradient boosted models (GBM), and random forest.
  • SAS experience
  • Able to work alone and on a team. Should feel comfortable tackling ambiguous problems with limited direction.
  • Self-motivated and effective communicator.
  • Commitment to creating reproducible and well-documented code.
  • Financial, fintech, or bank industry experience.
  • Education and/or experience in predictive modeling.


Physical Requirements: This position requires prolonged periods of sitting, working with a computer and other work-related equipment up to 9 hours per day. Additionally, tasks may include occasional lifting of documents up to 10 pounds. When working in the office, home and/or other locations there will be occasional bending, twisting, reaching and moving.
