The Vice President of Commercial Lending is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight of commercial and small business lending initiatives to drive loan volume growth, optimize the lending process, and enhance Chartway's competitive position. This role involves setting the strategic direction, managing financial performance, overseeing risk management, and ensuring operational efficiency within the commercial and small business lending portfolio. The VP will focus on achieving sustainable growth while maintaining sound credit quality. Additionally, the VP will develop and implement market-driven lending strategies to expand Chartway's presence in commercial lending. This position reports directly to the Chief Lending Officer.
Responsible and Accountable for:
Strategic Leadership & Market Growth
Develop and execute commercial lending strategies to increase lending volume and market share while maintaining strong portfolio performance.
Analyze market trends, member needs, and competitive landscape to identify opportunities for product development and business expansion.
Maintain deep awareness of the economic and regulatory environment, assessing risks and opportunities to guide strategic decision-making.
Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders, including business owners, industry associations, and government entities.
Lending Operations & Process Optimization
Oversee all facets of commercial lending operations, ensuring efficiency, scalability, and regulatory compliance.
Drive process enhancements to improve underwriting efficiency, credit decisions, and loan servicing.
Leverage technology to streamline the commercial lending experience, including digital loan applications, automated decisioning, and portfolio monitoring.
Work closely with internal teams, including credit risk, legal, and finance, to ensure alignment and execution of lending strategies.
Portfolio & Risk Management
Develop and enforce credit policies and underwriting guidelines to ensure sound lending practices.
Monitor commercial loan portfolio performance, including delinquency, charge-offs, and concentration risks, implementing corrective actions as needed.
Lead portfolio risk assessment efforts, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
Oversee the review and approval process for high-value or complex credit transactions.
Financial Performance & Business Development
Drive commercial loan production to achieve growth targets while ensuring a strong return on assets (ROA) and maintaining credit quality.
Develop key financial metrics and reporting to track performance, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.
Identify cross-selling business financial services opportunities to enhance member relationships and revenue growth.
Represent Chartway in the business community, fostering relationships that drive loan origination and brand awareness.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing commercial lending team to achieve business objectives.
Foster a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and innovation within the lending division.
Provide coaching and development opportunities for team members to enhance their skills and expertise in commercial lending.
Recruit, retain, and develop top talent to support Chartway's commercial lending growth strategy.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Collaborative and innovative leader with demonstrated ability to build and develop small business services that align with Chartway's mission and values.
Strong leadership skills with a focus on building, coaching, and developing a high-performing team to meet financial and strategic goals.
Proven ability to underwrite and approve commercial loans, including handling all facets of business credit administration and interpreting complex financial and legal documents.
Deep knowledge of small business member needs in deposits, lending, merchant services, and related business offerings.
Strong understanding of credit risk including underwriting, portfolio performance, and default mitigation.
Proven insight into business segments, with the ability to market and build strategic relationships with target industries and member groups.
Thorough knowledge of business products and services, including government lending programs (e.g., SBA).
Understands the technology and systems needed to build digitally centric processes and lead successful implementation and adoption.
Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively across all levels and departments of the organization.
Proficient in generating and reviewing Commercial Real Estate loan documentation using Finastra LaserPro, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations and credit union standards.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to use data to inform decisions, identify trends, and solve complex challenges.
Education and Experience:
Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
Experience: Minimum seven years of Commercial/Business lending experience with at least five years of experience developing and managing business assets. Management experience is required
