Qualification requirements of the Speech Language Pathologist (SLP): • NYS Licensed in Speech Language Pathology. • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Language Pathology. • Masters in Speech Language Pathology. • BLS certified. • Minimum of three years working in a Mental Health facility. Essential Functions: Contracted SLP will work 20 hours/week (shift to be determined) & agrees to render services through the following: 1. Direct contact between SLP and patients. 2. Consultation with treatment team & participation in the continuing interdisciplinary evaluation of individual patients for purposes of initiation, monitoring and follow-up of individualized treatment plans and discharge planning. 3. Administering initial & ongoing diagnostic evaluation, screenings, feeding evaluations, recommending treatment & providing therapy to patients with speech, language, cognition, voice, fluency, and dysphagia disorders as clinically indicated in a psychiatric setting using appropriate test procedures in accordance with the American Speech & Hearing Association's (ASHA) scope of practice guidelines. 4. Conducting in-service training for professional staff by demonstrating corrective and rehabilitative techniques for communication and/or swallowing disorders. 5. Updating relevant parties about patient progress. 6. Treatment services interpreted as an extension of the evaluation process that include: A. Direct therapy with patients for diagnosis and treatment of speech, voice, language, and dysphagia disorders. B. Consultation with appropriate staff for speech improvement and speech education activities. C. Consultation with appropriate staff for improved feeding skills and feeding safety activities. D. Collaboration with appropriate staff to develop specialized habilitative and therapeutic programs for improving the communication skills of individuals in areas of comprehension, expression, and pragmatic language skills (for example: improvement in articulation, voice, rhythm, verbal as well as non-verbal language and Sign Language). E. Collaboration with appropriate staff to develop individualized feeding protocols to reduce risk and improve safe eating and swallowing skills by modifying food textures, liquid consistencies, feeding postures, using specialized adaptive feeding equipment etc. F. Making recommendation for referrals to specialty consultation (e.g., ENT, GI etc.) as clinically indicated by the needs of the patient & documenting rationale for doing so. G. Evaluating the effectiveness of procedures and makes appropriate modifications. H. Recommending the need for an instrumental swallow study like modified barium swallow (MBS) as clinically indicated. 7. Participating in all trainings required for direct care & contracted staff. 8. Completing documentation accurately in a timely manner and according to facility policies. Information on results of evaluation and assessment of patients will be given in clear concise form and provide detailed information on the patient. These summaries will be written so that a person unfamiliar with the patient will be able to understand the patient as it relates to speech and dysphagia including past therapy, goals for present phase of therapy and any specific methods that work best with the patient including referral for medical and other professional attention as clinically indicated. Evaluations will conform to the medical record format in use at PPC. 9. Any other assigned duties as need to comply with applicable Federal and State regulations. 10. Demonstrates competency in the skills required by the facility by completing initial & on-going annual competency assessment by a peer.
