Job Description Summary: The Middleware Engineer II will play a pivotal role in ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of Blue KC servers, web applications, middleware, and file transfer services. This role requires advanced understanding and ability to lead and manage multiple types of middleware and systems both on-prem and in the Azure cloud. We prefer the canidate resides in the general Kansas City metropolitan area.
1)Implementing, automating, supporting, monitoring, and optimizing new and existing applications and associated software need to run these systems. Primary focus areas are web server software (IIS, Tomcat, SpringBoot) and Application Server software (IBM WebSphere) and cloud and container systems such as Kubernetes).
2)This resource will also be primary support for maintaining both on-prem Windows Servers and resources hosted in the Azure cloud. Websites/applications may be developed in house or be procured as commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and installed by this team on the resources the team administers, and this team is tasked with assuring these systems are reliable and performant.
3)Additionally, the team is primary support for all managed file transfer services including: Sterling File Gateway admin and support, pgp encryption, vendor management and key exchange and all other facets of managed file transfer. Job Description
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to middleware and application servers such as performance bottlenecks, server failures, configuration errors, networking issues, and application deployment or execution errors.
  • Schedules installations and upgrades and maintains them in accordance with established IS policies and procedures.
  • Monitors and tunes the system to achieve optimum performance levels and designs monitoring to alert to issues and self-healing strategies to assure maximum uptime of systems.
  • Communicates business information, technical information, and developments to users and technical staff in both verbal, written form, and electronic form (e.g. architecture diagrams).
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current and emerging technologies and technical strategy, and advises where improvements are deemed necessary.
  • Lead in the design and implementation of new and improved systems or new technology.
  • Respond to incidents and provide timely resolution to middleware-related issues. Provide technical support to end-users and application teams.
  • Document troubleshooting processes and knowledge base articles for future reference.
  • Designs monitoring and verification procedures to ensure reliability of newly installed or upgraded systems.
  • Researches and coordinates implementation of best practices for systems over which this position has been designated lead. Provides reporting on implementation.
  • Manages and provides architectural input to internal projects of new implementations and software systems upgrades.
  • Documents and provides training for new and existing solutions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, Software Development, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in middleware engineering (or related discipline), with a focus on web servers and file transfer services.
  • Expert-level understanding of one or more of the following three: 1.)Java and Web Server Administration (Manage and maintain web servers (e.g., Apache, Nginx, IIS) to ensure optimal performance and availability, Implement and maintain security measures to protect web servers from vulnerabilities and attacks, and Troubleshoot and resolve web server-related issues, including performance bottlenecks, configuration errors, and application failures.) 2.) File transfer services (Configure and manage file transfer protocols (e.g., FTP, SFTP, FTPS) to facilitate secure and efficient data exchange, Implement data security measures, including encryption and access controls, to protect sensitive information (e.g. PGP encryption, SSL certificates, client login/password management), and Monitor file transfer performance and optimize processes to ensure timely and reliable data delivery.) 3.) Middleware Integration (Integrate middleware components with other systems and applications to support business processes, Develop and maintain scripts and automation tools to streamline middleware management tasks)
  • Collaborate with development teams to ensure middleware solutions align with application requirements.Able to represent complex data in diagrams or through other techniques that communicate precise information to both business and technical staff.
  • Strong customer-facing skills and ability to drive troubleshooting with multiple vendors and internal teams.
  • Experience creating technical and process documentation and architecture diagrams.
  • Proven analytical and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Experience scripting/programming in a language such as Ansible, PowerShell, .NET, Java, C++, Python, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of networking protocols and configuration and management of load balancers and http servers.
  • Demonstrated capacity for complex scripting and programming including automation, Infrastructure as code, and self-healing problem detection.
  • Expert knowledge of one or more enterprise application server software or middlware, such as IBM WebSphere (preferred), IBM IIB/ACE and MQ, IBM Sterling File Gateway.
  • Experience with Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2022.
  • Certification in relevant technologies (WAS, MQ, Edifecs, SFG, IIS, Kafka, Azure Services) from IBM, RedHat, or Microsoft.
  • Experience with monitoring tools (e.g. Splunk, Azure Monitor)
