The Respiratory Therapist has specialized training in Pulmonary Diagnostic to assist with pulmonary patients in the clinic as needed for quality patient care. Institution of any type of physiologic monitoring applicable to respiratory therapy, including but not limited to cardiopulmonary and neurological processes related to such diseases...

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provide clinical respiratory services under the auspices of physician orders or approved protocols. (55%)
  • Practice under the direction and supervision of a physician involving the assessment treatment, testing, monitoring and care of persons with deficiencies and abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system.
  • Such therapy includes but is not limited to the following activities conducted upon a prescription or other order of a provider communicated and duly recorded.
  • Administration of non controlled drugs and medications common to respiratory therapy that have been dispensed by a pharmacist and prescribed by a provider; exception administration of medications necessary during cardiopulmonary arrest;
  • Pulmonary assessment, testing techniques, and therapy modification required for implementation of physician-approved respiratory therapy protocols
  • Consult with physicians and other health care professionals regarding patient status and care plans. Develop and implement respiratory care plans.
  • Monitor patient progress and modify respiratory care plan. Inform physicians immediately of any serious concerns.
  • Organize and priorities personal workload. Use spare time to assist other team members.
  • Adhere to clinic, hospital and department safety policies and procedures such as universal precautions, isolation policies, and emergency procedures.
  • Assume minor supervisory responsibility for the operation when assigned and/or charge therapist responsibility.
  • Performs all Diagnostic procedures as need (Spirometry, Six Minute Walks, etc.)
2. Provide patient, student, staff and provider education related to Respiratory Therapy. (30%)
  • Instruct the patient, family, and caregivers in the prevention, management, and therapeutic modalities related to respiratory therapy for patients in any setting...
  • Orientate new staff members to Respiratory Services policies and procedures.
  • Participate in continuing education sessions to ensure knowledge and skills are current. Ensure all required certifications are up to date.
3. Provide technical support for all Respiratory Services equipment. (10%)
  • Perform troubleshooting and basis maintenance for department respiratory equipment.
  • Comply with safety regulations related to equipment and medical gases.
  • Clean Respiratory Services equipment as required or prepare equipment for central processing. Dispose of single use items appropriately.
  • Assist with the evaluation of new equipment.
4. Assist with general department functions. (5%)
  • Report any problems with patients, equipment, staff or other matters to department senior staff without delay. Complete incident and accident report forms.
  • Provide personal shift workload statistical data.
  • Provide input for department review of goals, policies and procedures.
  • Participate in department quality improvement programs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Supervisor.
SERVICE EXCELLENCE:

  • Provides prompt, courteous service to all internal and external customers. Prioritizes and addresses customer needs and demands in a professional manner, providing follow-up and developing cooperative relationships.

  • Assists team members in completion of tasks and assignments to ensure continuity of service. Orient new co-workers and actively support team development.
AGE SPECIFIC CONSIDERATIONS:

May provide patient care for people of the following age group:
  • Neonates (Birth - 28 days)
  • Pediatrics (29 days - 14 years)
  • Young Adult (15 years - 24 years)
  • Adults (25 years - 64 years)
  • Geriatrics (65 years and older)
QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational and/or Professional Qualifications:

1. Bachelors or Associates degree in Respiratory Therapy.

Previous Experience:

Previous experience desired. Must be able to perform all Diagnostic procedures (Spirometry, Six Minute Walks, etc.) Must have good computer skills and good clinical skills.

Licensure, Certification, Registration, etc.:

Current Louisiana Respiratory Therapist license required.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None.

EQUIPMENT, MATERIALS, AND VALUABLES:
  • Respiratory equipment. (Ventilators, nebulizers, pulse oximetry, etc.)
  • Computers and other office equipment.
  • Safety equipment.
SCHEDULE:

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Adjustments to schedule may be made to meet patients' needs.

HAZARDS:
  • Job duties will include tasks which have the potential for daily exposure to patient blood/body fluids.

  • Daily exposure to sharp objects/latex.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Intermittent sitting and standing.
  • Constant walking.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, squatting, kneeling, reaching, and twisting.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to see (near and far), hear, talk, have use of right and left hands, have use of both feet for repetitive movement, and have dexterity in fingers
