- This position will also provide onsite support to other Allina Health eye clinics
- 1.0 FTE (80 hours per two-week period)
- 8 to 10-hour day shifts (hours and shift length will vary depending on clinic location/business needs)
- No weekends, no major holidays

Job Description:
Assists in the care of the patient receiving ophthalmology services by conducting preliminary ocular testing, vision screening, and preparing the patient for the exam and/or in-office surgery. Also able to operate a manual lensometer, a keratometer and an ophthalmometer as needed. Coordinates the care of the patient through referral, consultation, procedure scheduling and postoperative visits.
Principle Responsibilities
- Performs patient preparation, assessments and eye exam
- Collects vital signs, medication reconciliation, allergies and chief complaint.
- Collects patient and family history and ocular history.
- Performs preliminary and advanced testing as needed.
- Administers medication as needed for examination.
- Performs diagnostic ophthalmic procedures.
- Records all pertinent information in the electronic medical record.
- Opens and closes patient rooms at beginning and end of the day.
- Provides surgical support
- Assists with surgical in-office procedures and foreign body removals.
- Schedules surgeries and obtains prior authorizations and referrals.
- Conducts pre-surgery testing and patient education for surgical procedures.
- Department support
- Provides patient contact lens insertion/removal training.
- Schedules surgery and peri-operative and post-operative visits.
- Answers phones and documents in the electronic medical record as needed.
- Department supply management/maintenance
- Orders and maintains ophthalmic supplies, medications and diagnostic contact lens inventory.
- Calibrates lasers, programs laser treatments and performs ancillary testing for laser performance.
- Cleans and sterilizes equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- 2 to 5 years medical/optical experience
- Knowledge of complete eye exam tests and procedures and surgical assisting procedures
Preferred Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Vocational or Technical Training in a two year Ophthalmic Technician program
- Familiarity with pre-certification and payer requirements
Licenses/Certifications
- Certified Opthalmic Technician - Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology required upon hire or
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant - Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology required upon hire and
- Certified Opthalmic Technician - Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology required within 1 year
- BLS Tier 1 - Basic Life Support - Multisource preferred upon hire
