Wages: $28.32 per hour; $5.36 per hour deferred to Union pension. At a minimum, all qualified applicants must have: Education/Experience/Training: --Five (5) years of experience in commercial driving operations. --Or any equivalent combination of driving experience relevant to the position. --Clean driving record is required. Certifications: --Valid Commercial Driver's License Class A Type 1 with Manual Transmission, Air Brakes, Trailers, and Tank endorsement issued by the State of Montana; HAZMAT endorsement preferred but not required. * This position is subject to the Cascade County Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy which includes pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing and follow-up testing. JOB SUMMARY: The Truck Driver (Driver) at the Cascade County Public Works Department (PW) is required to perform a variety of functions and duties that include operating various heavy highway trucks and tractor-trailer units such as belly-dump combinations, tandem end-dumps, distributor trucks, lowboy, flatbed, fifth wheel and pup trailers and single axle and tandem snow plow/sander unit combination trucks in the course of the daily construction and maintenance of Cascade County roads. The Driver will operate dump trucks to haul asphalt, dirt, trash, rock, salt, sand and water and other designated materials, lay down gravel, sub-grade rehabilitation, water dirt roads for blade operators, haul material, machinery and equipment to work sites and other locations and operate tractor mowers, asphalt pavers and chippers. The Driver will occasionally provide minor equipment maintenance such as greasing suspensions, checking hydraulic/brake fluid, oil, water, transmission and air pressure levels and cleaning vehicles. The Driver will occasionally act as flag person, place traffic cones and other traffic control devices to ensure smooth flow of traffic and perform other related duties as required or assigned. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Operates and maintains tractor-trailer units including belly dump, lowboy, flatbed, fifth wheel and pup trailers; Operates and maintains single axle and tandem snowplow/sander trucks; Operates in all types of construction settings and operations including gravel lay down, dozers, subgrade rehabilitation, asphalt pavers, chippers, tractor-mowers, trucks and tractor trailers; Occasionally provides minor equipment maintenance such as greasing suspensions, checking hydraulic/brake fluid, oil, water, transmission and air pressure levels and cleans vehicles; Operates dump trucks to haul asphalt, dirt, trash, rock, salt, sand and water and other designated materials; Maintains dirt roads by watering for blade operator; Responsible for timely hauling of material, machinery and equipment to work site and other locations; Acts as flag person, place traffic cones and other traffic control devices to assure smooth flow of traffic; Practices excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials and the general public; Schedule may include shifts that occur on a Saturday and/or Sunday; Performs other duties as assigned or required. Knowledge and understanding of: Driving practices, tools, equipment and techniques associated with truck driving trade; Standard procedures and equipment used in hauling, loading, unloading and driving activities; Safety standards and precautions pertaining to truck driving, chaining loads, operating belly dump trailers, lowboy trailers, flatbed trailers, dual trailer, pup trailers, etc.; Proper traffic control at construction sites including flagging and placement of barricades and cones; Traffic laws; Interpersonal communication and exceptional customer service skills; All County safety procedures and practices. Skills in: Operating and maintaining heavy highway construction equipment; Operating and maintaining single axle and tandem snowplow/sander trucks; Operating in all types of construction settings and operations including gravel lay down, dozers, subgrade rehabilitation, asphalt pavers, chippers, tractor-mowers, trucks, and tractor trailers; Operating two-way radios; Educating and encouraging others to follow safe practices and procedures to accomplish work objectives. Ability to: Operate vehicles and equipment in a safe and prudent manner; Perform heavy manual labor, including bending, stooping, reaching, carrying and lifting heavy objects weighing up to one-hundred (100) lbs. using correct lifting techniques; Manual dexterity of both hands and feet to perform activities such lifting overhead, twisting, climbing ladders and stairs, repetitive arm motion below, at and above shoulder level; Judge distances; Work under unfavorable working conditions such as in inclement weather, in heavy traffic conditions, car exhaust fumes, traversing rough undeveloped terrain or construction sites, shoveling material or picking up debris; Work while wearing required personal safety equipment which includes gloves, hardhats, safety glasses etc.; Remove and reinstall tire chains during the plowing of snow; Remove and reinstall tires, in case of flat repair; Aid and assist mechanics during a field repair or service; Must be able to sit for long periods of time and perform labor-related activities (lifting, shoveling, raking, etc.) when required; Employ and enforce safety practices and procedures; Follow schedules and oral and written instructions; Observe established lines of authority; Work independently and as a team member; Interact with the public or other employees in a professional, respectful and courteous manner; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with department heads, supervisors, and co-workers; Exercise sound judgment within established policies and procedures; Read and follow Safety Data Sheets (SDS) sheets; Attend and participate in training and educational sessions for employees; Work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays as needed; Be willing and able to be on 24-hour call basis as needed; Observe work hours and demonstrate punctuality; Perform other duties as required or assigned. The successful applicant shall serve a 6-month probationary period and will have a criminal background check conducted. The results thereof may disqualify the applicant from consideration for employment with the County. This position is covered by and subject to the Collective Bargaining Agreement by between Cascade County and the Public Employees' Craft Council.
