Education and Experience:
Minimum Education: MA/MS in Audiology
Minimum Experience: 3-5 years experience with pediatric population as a clinical or educational audiologist working with hearing aids and assistive devices

General Definition:
The Educational Audiologist provides supports and recommendations to maximize the auditory access of students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and to promote communication access, which is essential for participation and learning in the classroom. The Educational Audiologist also participates in the evaluation/consultation of each child referred for testing through the WIU D/HOH program including preschool, school age and non-public. Key responsibilities include the assessment of the student's auditory functioning; evaluations; selection, fitting, care and maintenance of hearing assistive technology; training and consultation of regular and special educators; and ongoing collaboration with team members including clinical audiologists.

Description of Duties:
  • Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary professional team to assess the student's auditory functioning/performance and need for assistive listening devices while assisting in determining the eligibility and need for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Support Services.
    • Collaborates with community audiologist, reviews and interprets audiologic evaluations for continued educational management of the student's hearing loss.
    • Educates school personnel about language, communication, social, and educational effects of hearing loss/deafness, technology options, and associated accommodations.
    • Participates in team meetings and IEP meetings to provide expertise regarding assistive technology needs, equipment and accommodations.
    • Assists D/HOH teachers in determining goals and objectives relating to technology needs when creating and completing the IEP including the communication plan.
  • ?Manages audiologic equipment including hearing assistive devices (WIU and District owned equipment).
  • Follows a process which includes evaluation, selection, fitting, training, care, maintenance and repair of all school provided individual hearing assistive technology.
  • Maintains and updates inventory of WIU and District owned technology/equipment.
  • Maintains calibration of WIU-owned audiometers.
  • Troubleshoots students' personal devices (hearing aids, cochlear implants, bone anchored hearing aids) to determine if it is necessary to contact the D/HOH teacher, parent, and clinical audiologist due to a persisting problem.
  • Provides audiological counseling to student or parent regarding audiologist findings, new technology, hearing loss impact and amplification benefit.
  • Provides trainings about hearing, hearing loss, and equipment for school personnel to facilitate a better understanding of the impact of hearing loss and how to use student's equipment with a self-created presentation as needed.
  • Assesses auditory processing function and makes recommendations to manage Audiological Processing Disorder in the classroom with a team including a psychologist and speech language pathologist.
  • Collaborates with Supervisor of D/HOH staff to help facilitate programming, trainings, and maintaining the D/HOH program.
  • Maintains a knowledge base of technologies for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students through attending workshops, conferences and trainings in order to enhance learning opportunities.
  • Collaborates with staff to develop and plan programs for Deaf/Hard of Hearing families and students. To help foster relationships with peers and interact on a personal level to understand the effects of hearing loss.
  • Maintains daily billing logs for all direct, indirect and collateral services.
  • Leverages financial resources and plans for financial impact of equipment and services.
  • Articulates and demonstrates a personal and professional code of ethics.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or designee.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to develop, foster and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, administrators and community professionals.

  • Applies extensive knowledge of the IEP and 504 process and paperwork.
