Position Purpose
Operates school bus and related equipment to provide safe and orderly transportation of students and other authorized persons on assigned routes and other designated locations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Vehicle Operation
- Drives bus daily following assigned route and adhering to established schedules.
- Drives bus to and from extracurricular activities.
- Anticipates problems such as traffic, weather, road conditions, and schedule changes and makes necessary adjustments to ensure student safety and reduce delays.
- Performs pre- and post-trip inspections according to specifications to ensure bus can be operated safely and notifies supervisor of needed repairs.
- Keeps assigned bus clean and maintains appropriate level of fuel.
- Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical problems and completes required corresponding reports.
- Instructs students on safe entry, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations. Supervises students while they board and leave the bus, and cross the street.
- Maintains discipline in a courteous manner and uses effective behavior management control over groups of students. Reports student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicates with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted.
- Operates and monitors two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office and other drivers.
- Ensures that a communication device is in proper working order before each trip.
- Completes and maintains accurate, up-to-date, and timely records and reports, including but not limited to those related to bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers.
- Attends and participates in trainings and other career/professional development opportunities.
- Follows procedures to ensure that no child is left alone on bus without adult supervision at any time, and that all children have departed bus at the end of all bus routes (morning, evening and during field trips or other special trips).
- In case of accidents/emergencies, evacuates children according to written and practiced procedures, ensures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written report as required.
- Observes all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Ensures proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, and reflector.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor. Reports any hazardous conditions along scheduled route.
- Maintains Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate.

- Knowledge of safety protocols, including District rules and regulations, and Texas rules of the road.
- Knowledge of all traffic laws, regulations, road signs, and related information.
- Knowledge of how to conduct pre/post trip inspections.

- Skill in maintaining composure and performing responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
- Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Ability to read signs, route descriptions, and maps, calculate mileage and route times, and complete route descriptions, incident reports, and mileage reports.
- Ability to use manual dexterity sufficient to operate the bus, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the bus.
- Ability to have sharp vision and hearing within professionally determined normal ranges with correction, if needed.
- Ability to complete required bus driver safety training.

- Travels to school district buildings, to vehicle service stations, field trip locations, and other destinations and professional meetings, as required.
- Tools/Equipment Used: Manual dexterity sufficient to operate a school bus, conduct pre/post trip inspections, and clean the bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to, reflective signs, and fire extinguisher.
- Posture: Prolonged sitting; moderate standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
- Motion: Frequent sitting; frequent walking; frequent use of hands for fine manipulation, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching, including keyboarding and use of mouse, and operation of video display terminal; frequent driving.
- Lifting: Must exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally (such as lifting students in wheelchairs), and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Environment: Indoors 25%, in controlled environment, 75% outdoors, in uncontrolled environment; frequent exposure to weather elements, extreme heat/cold, noise, hazardous chemicals, vehicle fumes, dust, and vibration to hand and arm from steering wheel; works around moving vehicles; frequently works irregular hours, and occasionally works prolonged hours.
- Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
- Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.
- Education: Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency preferred.
- Certification/License:
- Clear and valid Texas CDL Class B driver's license with (P) passenger and (S) school bus endorsement;
- Insurable by the District's insurance carrier required;
- Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate;
- Complete a 20-hour certification course for a Texas School Bus Driver Safety Training Certificate.
- Experience: Experience as bus driver in a school district or experience transporting children preferred; must have an acceptable driving record.
- Language: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred in some settings.
- Additional Requirements:
- Must be able to pass annual physical;
- Must be able to pass a recurring 8-hour Bus Driver Safety Training course provided by the District to maintain the CDL license.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- NO positive drug or alcohol tests including pre-employment, random, post-accident or reasonable suspicion.
- Driving and accident record:
- NO more than 2 violations during previous 36 months including:
- moving traffic violations (including no more than 1 preventable accident);
- failure to provide proof of valid driver's license or proof of insurance;
- equipment violations.
- NO Driving Under the Influence (DUI) for drug or alcohol.
- NO leaving scene of an accident (bodily injury or physical damage).
- NO vehicular assault, manslaughter, or homicide.
- NO operating a vehicle with suspended or revoked driver's license.
- NO reckless driving, speed contests, drag racing, or highway racing.
- NO use of a vehicle in commission of a felony.
- NO operating a vehicle without owner's permission (unauthorized use or grand theft).
