The Mammography Specialist operates and executes Mammo procedures with expert knowledge of the capability of the Mammo unit and the ability to perform Mammo procedures expertly. This includes skills in operating and performing various tasks in preparing, executing, and completing procedures within their Mammography environment. This would include proper order review, general mammography, possible stereotactic biopsy, and excellent patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS

License /Certification
Required:

CRT in Diagnostic Radiology Technology and Mammographic Radiologic Technology

BLS

Preferred: ARRT license in Radiology and Mammography

Education
Required: Must have 8 hours of training in a MQSA approved course in digital mammography.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential

Acts as a liaison to radiologists for quality critique of images.

Performs Digital Mammography and other breast imaging procedures.

Performs and documents patient assessment/history related to procedures and provides education to meet patient's needs. Performs or assists with physical breast exam for mass or nodule localization.

Pulls correct chart for patient, checking paperwork and referring questions to supervisor or physician before performing procedure. All paperwork and data entry is accurate and completed in a timely manner.

Understands basic principles, indications, benefits, and risks associated with mammography. Understands definitions and basic descriptions to treatment options. Provides education to patients and family.

Applies knowledge and principles of Universal precautions, aseptic, and sterile techniques.

Operates Digital mammography equipment according to procedure. Provides radiation protection for patient, self and others, according to prescribed safety standards according to ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable). Adjusts technical factors to accommodate the age, body habitus, disease process and condition of each patient.

May perform, routine radiographic or fluoroscopic imaging procedures using imaging equipment and contrast media as needed.

Assists physicians in performing image guided diagnostic and invasive procedures (e.g.: stereotactic biopsy, needle localization, ductograms).

Uses department computers according to procedures assuring all compliance rules are followed.

Keeps designated work area clean and orderly throughout the day. Cleans equipment and rooms; stocks supplies and maintains area in a ready condition daily, before shift end.

Develops images using digital mammography or stereotactic units. Uses correct positioning markers on all images.

Actively participates in CQI. Has detailed knowledge of all tests performed. Coordinates and compiles all quality assurance data as outlined in the tests listed in the ACR mammography, quality control manual.

Recognizes and reports any malfunctions or variation in QC data or machine operations to manager and service engineer as needed.

Has basic understanding of the medical physicist tests listed in the ACR mammography, quality control manual.

Assists other members of the shift with patient assignments, assuring all patients receive high quality, timely studies. Consistently keeps patients informed while waiting for exam.

Develops and maintains good working relationships with all members of KH, medical staff, and community.

Becomes familiar with and able to assist physicians in viewing images on digital mammography system as well as images in synapse.

Becomes familiar with and is able to assist physicians with viewing images involved in stereotactic breast biopsies.

Assists in administering first aid as necessary. Maintains current Basic Life Support certification.

Fully understands and complies with ensuring proper security of medications.

May have access to cabinets that house emergency medication kits, contrast reaction kits, commercially prepared kits, and medications that are provided to licensed personnel authorized to administer.

Responsible for maintaining PAR Levels and currency of dates on supplies and medications they stock.

Additional

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area. Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs. Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.

Pay Range
$42.10 -$63.16
