Position Summary: 

Flagship & Pioneering Medicines is seeking a hands-on Director of Data Architecture to envision and construct the data framework and assets for our Research & Development data architecture in AWS. In close collaboration with Cloud Platform Operations, R&D Applications, and PM’s Bioinformatics, you will orchestrate the data architectures and deployments to align with our enterprise architecture and the unique scientific and business strategies of Pioneering Medicines. Your role will be crucial in designing and implementing standards for our data solutions, ensuring access, performance, and security of our data systems and applications meet the highest standards of information security and privacy.  

Reporting to the Senior Director of Cloud Architecture and Scientific Computing in a matrixed environment, you will collaborate extensively with Digital, Research, and TechOps teams. Your leadership will be pivotal in guiding the overall architecture design and deployment of data products, propelling the objectives of Data Science, Bioinformatics, and Machine Learning. Furthermore, you will work with various business units to supply data[bases, marts, etc.] and analytical tools essential for their operations. In this role, you will exercise a high degree of independence, acting as the primary expert in your field. You will lead and manage highly complex tasks with minimal supervision, designing the blueprints, enablers, and platforms for data products that fast-track our business operations and in-silico experimentation. Your expertise will ensure robust platforms and correct pipeline configurations, essential for the integrity of our products and the effective execution of digital science at Pioneering Medicines. 

Key Responsibilities: 

• Working backwards from PM’s requirements, architect and oversee the development of advanced data models and infrastructure, enabling cutting-edge medical research and operational efficiency within AWS environments.
• Align data strategies with the scientific and business goals of Pioneering Medicines, ensuring compliance with industry standards and privacy regulations.
• Lead the creation and integration of data and analytical tools to support various business operations, promoting a culture of data-driven decision-making.
• Spearhead collaborations with IT, Data Systems + Engineering, Applications, and Information Security to facilitate the deployment of robust data platforms for informatics and machine learning initiatives.
• Mentor and guide teams on best practices in data engineering, data architecture, fostering an environment of learning and growth. You will be the steward of code development and analysis best practices and expected to maintain compliance for production code.

Required Qualifications: 

• A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Life Sciences, or a related field.
• At least 10 years of data engineering and architecture experience, with a proven track record in the life sciences or healthcare industry.
• Experience and informed opinions on big data platforms, formats, products and tools.
• Expertise with
• Proficiency with Python and its ecosystem of data-focused libraries. Experience with other languages related to big data, such as Scala or Java, considered  
• Demonstrated expertise with a variety of database types, including relational, NoSQL, graph, and techniques, g. warehouse, data lakes, etc.
• Highly skilled at communicating complex architectures to diverse stakeholders of varying technical skills.
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to work independently, driving complex projects to successful completion.
• Experience managing consulting teams.
• Disciplined practitioner of Agile project management. 

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Previous experience with governance for clinical data.
• Demonstrated delivery of data engineering solutions within the Life Science industry or data software for biotechnology customers.
• AWS Certifications, including Solutions Architect (Professional), Data Analytics, Database and Machine Learning
