Summary

This is a Direct Hire Open Continuous Announcement (OCA) for the Indian Health Service at Colorado River Service Unit in Parker, Arizona and Hopi Health Care Center in Polacca, Arizona.

Emergency Registered Nurses (RN) provide comprehensive nursing care to patients across the age spectrum and presenting with a wide range of acute and emergent conditions in Emergency Department settings.

Duties
  • Incumbent apply established professional nursing concepts, principles and practices to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care to patients presenting to Emergency Departments seeking assessment, stabilization and treatment of emergent and/or acute medical needs. Experience in assessing the immediate needs of patients, prioritizing and organizing the plan of care from Emergency Department admission through discharge. Utilizes the nursing process to identify individual patient needs and to develop, implement and evaluate plans of patient care for acutely ill and/or critically ill patients.
  • Provides professional skilled, competent nursing care specific to age of the patient (adult, geriatric, obstetric, pediatric, neonate) to meet physician, emotional, spiritual and social-cultural needs of the patient, by means of direct care and teaching. Observes and assesses patient's clinical condition; recognizes, identifies and interprets serious situations and immediately implements proper action.
  • Documents observations, nursing interventions, responses to therapeutic measures and status of coordinated activities between nursing and other professional disciplines utilizing the approved hospital format. Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician to include, but not limited to, medication administration, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, treatments and maintains those measures taken which are ongoing in nature.
  • Operates and monitors specialized equipment such as resuscitation units, respiratory therapy apparatus, monitoring devices (cardiac monitors, oxygen monitors, etc.), IV pumps and regulators, temperature regulating devices, suction, blood glucose monitors, mist tents, etc. Accept responsibilities as team leader and/or charge nurse. In the absence of the supervisor, accepts those supervisory and administrative responsibilities when required.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):

Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree From Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-9 and above, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.

GS-9 BASIC REQUIREMENTS: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Possession of a master's degree in professional nursing;
OR
  • Possession of a diploma, associate degree or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program AND at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 or above):
    • independent assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive nursing care for a variety of acutely ill patients;
    • develop plans of care to meet the needs of assigned patients; recognize adverse signs and symptoms and reacting swiftly in emergency situations;
    • basic knowledge of triaging patients
The nurse will progressively assume responsibilities as assigned in the Emergency Department setting, under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee.

GS-10 Minimum Qualifications: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • Possession of a diploma, associate degree or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program AND at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-7 or above):
    • managing the care of patients who present to the Emergency Department with a wide variety of conditions ranging from non-urgent to life-threatening or emergent.
    • Experience in assessing the immediate needs of patients, prioritizing care needs, working in a collaborative interdisciplinary team to address identified care needs of critically ill patients.
    • Experience coordinating and organizing the plan of care from Emergency Department admission through discharge.
    • Experience performing charge nurse and/or team lead responsibilities.
