The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for managing and overseeing the accounting functions within the organization. The position is responsible for reconciling accounts, preparing financial statements, ensuring compliance with GAAP, and supporting month-end and year-end close processes. Maintains a strong understanding of accounting principles and works collaboratively across departments.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes.
  • Reviews and post employee expense reports and credit card expenses.
  • Assists in customer and vendor setup and maintenance including W-9 requests.
  • Posts accruals on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Assists with recurring accruals and amortization entries.
  • Assists Accounts Payable Specialist as needed with all Accounts Payable functions including but not limited to vendor records, entering invoices, monitoring emails, Form W-9 updates, annual Form 1099 processing, accuracy of recorded invoices, etc.
  • Assists Accounts Receivable Accountant as needed with Receivable functions including but not limited to cash receipts, cash allocations, cash reconciliations, check deposits, etc.
  • Reviews, investigates, and corrects errors and inconsistencies in financial entries, documents, and reports.
  • Responsible for accuracy of monthly journal entries of various accounts as assigned.
  • Responsible for accuracy of monthly detailed reconciliations of various accounts as assigned.
  • Assists in the monthly, quarterly, and yearly variance analyses and explanations including detailed transactional financial reporting as required by management.
  • Assists in the documentation support and preparation for external auditors including financial statements and varied fiscal reports.
  • Maintains working relationships with other cost centers to ensure activities are properly recorded in the accounting system and assists staff from other departments in accounting/finance related problem solving.
  • Documents workflow and work procedures, updating on an ongoing basis.
  • Updates job knowledge and stays abreast of current accounting, sales tax, and payroll topics by participating in educational opportunities and reading professional publications.
  • Ensures compliance with US GAAP and Company policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to saving animals in the wild through: reduction of waste, water and energy use and inspiring guests and staff to take wildlife protection actions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • Two (2) years' experience in a non-profit environment, educational facility, or comparable industry preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of budgeting and financial processes
  • Understanding of sophisticated cost accounting systems and financial forecasting and budgeting
  • Ability to use and interpret financial data for managers, government representatives and the press.
  • Understanding of legislative and administrative processes and able to advise managers, board members and staff on processes and strategies.
  • Working knowledge of business accounting policies, procedures, practices, and software programs
  • Excellent interpersonal, team building, communication, and delegation skills; effective partners with other departments, all levels of staff, and both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, analytical and time management skills; appropriately prioritizes work and responds to shifting priorities and last-minute requests.
  • Experience managing complex organizations and processes.
