Founded in 2020, Ascent is a venture-backed startup building the unifying dashboard for high-intensity, small unit tactics. Our platform informs incident command where their operators are, how they're doing, and maps the space. During high risk operations, we ensure that incident command has the necessary information to make for more informed decisions and tasks can be accomplished as efficiently and safely as possible.

None of this would be possible without our customers. Since our founding, we have conducted over 1,900 customer discovery interviews with fire departments across the United States. We currently have over 20 members on our Fire Advisory Board to help guide us in our mission.

Role Overview

The Senior Android Engineer will be responsible for designing and implementing software architecture for Android devices to integrate our custom vision-enabled sensor modules. You will work alongside our engineering team to develop and implement new features and contribute to the overall success of our product. You will own the complete software development life cycle of all Android integrations and civTAK/ATAK plug-ins for our product.

Responsibilities

  • Design, plan, and implement SDKs, plug-ins, and applications on Android devices.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain unit tests to ensure the quality and ease-of-use of our sensor module SDKs and the robust and fail-safe operation of our civTAK/ATAK plug-ins.
  • Collaborate with other engineering team members to define UI/UX requirements and considerations within civTAK/ATAK.
  • Work with external data sources and APIs.
  • Continuously discover, evaluate, and implement new technologies to maximize development efficiency.
  • Create and maintain documentation to facilitate the cross-functional understanding of our software and hardware platform across the organization.
  • Contribute to the refinement of product and application requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or closely related field.
  • 2+ years of technical leadership experience.
  • 6+ years of experience in Android application development for mobile devices and/or embedded devices.
  • Familiarity with Git and Continuous-Integration tools.
  • Ability to interact with external vendors and channel partners for third-party integration.

Nice to Have but not Mandatory Qualifications

  • Familiarity with civTAK/ATAK COP software.
  • Experience with developing civTAK/ATAK plug-ins.
  • Experience with computer vision algorithms and their applications.
  • Experience working in mission-critical industries such as: aerospace, automotive, defense, first responder, and medical devices.
  • Familiarity with embedded Android board bring-up.
  • Familiarity with embedded Android device driver implementation.
  • Experience working within a startup company.
