BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Provides technician support under the direct supervision of a pharmacist. This includes: preparing medications to be dispensed, medication stock maintenance, record keeping and medication billing.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Supervisory Responsibilities: NO

Minimum Education: High School/GED Required

License/Certification Required: NO - Registration with the TN Board of Pharmacy required within 90 days of employment, successfully passing the PTCB certification for CPhT status required within first year of employment, active CPhT preferred.

Minimum Work Experience: 12 months of previous pharmacy experience required, hospital pharmacy experience preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Basic computer, typing, and math skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Demonstrates proficiency with math calculations. Prepares/selects appropriate medication for compounding, filling, and dispensing.
  • Restocks nursing units, operating room, recovery room, and ancillary departments with a limited supply of floor stock medications and supplies. Floor stock and internal requisitions are filled with the correct medication/strength/dosage form. Quantities do not exceed established par levels. Floor stock and internal requisitions are delivered to nursing units and ancillary departments on the same shift they are received.
  • Maintains and stocks medications while contributing to the maintenance of a fixed, minimal level and continually checking for expiring inventory, including: IV fluids, Solid, liquid dosage forms, Electronic cabinet or floor stock, Orders medications/supplies appropriately, Stores medications/supplies appropriately
  • Prepackages and labels medications into unit doses from bulk supply: Records required information in the bulk medication prepack log. Prepares accurate labels utilizing the proper labeling format. Any remaining labels are destroyed upon completion of packaging medications. Unit dose packaged medications are properly sealed. Unit dose packaged medications are placed in the proper location upon being checked by a pharmacist.
  • Communicates supply needs to inventory or technology technician for reorder of pharmacy supplies from Materials Administration and Central Supply.
  • Maintains accurate records of: Controlled Substances, Compounder, Electronic cabinet, Refrigerators, Warmer/incubators, Pharmacy Disaster Radio, Clean room air pressure differential gauges and room temperature thermometer, Hood cleaning, Baxa inlets, USP 797 compliance forms, Other as assigned
  • Ensures equipment operation and maintenance of: IV hoods, IV Compounder, Electronic cabinet (OmniCell), Electronic Scale, Omnilink, NarcVault (if acessible), printers, and Fax machine.
  • Compounded sterile preparation: Proper aseptic technique employed per USP 797 standards, Pass annual 797 assessment and Quality Control tests for Aseptic technique, Completed CSP's are visually inspected, CSPs are double checked for accuracy
  • Maintains pharmacy in a clean and organized fashion.
  • Maintains clean and sterile environment within the intravenous admixture area and anteroom. Routinely washes with appropriate germicidal solutions all hoods, counters, carts, and all other equipment that will be used within the work area per USP 797 standards.
  • Prepares and dispenses "specially" handed medications appropriately: Controlled Substances, High Alert, Sound-alike/Look-alike, Do not Tube, Room Temp / Refrigerate / Frozen
  • Annual competencies are maintained in a timely manner and do not go past due ( Video view, Crash cart review, State required CE for handling hazardous drugs.)
  • Fills patient medications correctly and appropriately: Medications are delivered to the proper nursing units and ancillary departments. Takes appropriate steps (such as double checking and checking against a copy of the physician's order) to prevent dispensing errors
  • Delivers checked medications to the nursing units. Returns discontinued or discharged patient medications to the Pharmacy. Reports unusual occurrences with inventory to the inventory tech, operations manager, or lead pharmacist in their absence. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment. Interacts with all of the above in a considerate, helpful, and courteous manner as observed by coordinator and peers. Maintains confidentiality of all hospital and patient information at all times
  • Continuously displays a "can do" attitude within the department and across departmental lines to contribute to the overall customer service program in place at the hospital. Resolves questions with the Pharmacist, Nursing service, and/or Physician. Answers the phone promptly and appropriately. Effectively and thoroughly trains new technicians on pharmacy processes when assigned. Teaches assigned pharmacy students Pharmacy processes using demonstration and verbal understanding (shadowing). Obtains knowledge of Automated Cabinet Reporting (according to access level). Provides or finds assistance for Nursing units with Automated Cabinet inventory, billing, or documnetation issues.
  • Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Reads, attends, and acknowledges Pharmacy and Hospital communications.
  • Fosters mature professional relationships with fellow employees in a courteous, friendly manner as measured by management observation and peer input. Willingly accepts any other assignment that may be requested.
  • Bills/credits patient medications by use of the computer charging system. Handles non-patient pharmacy charges appropriately (i.e., floor stock). Acquires complete understanding of specific mixing instructions prior to medication compounding.
  • Stays aware of drug shortages and backorders. Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
