Clinical Nursing Supervisor
Reports To: Clinical Director - Nursing
Position Objective: The Clinical Nursing Supervisor is responsible for directly supervising staff and serving as a clinical expert within the unit. This role focuses on education/staff development and designated management functions to ensure the delivery of high-quality, cost-effective healthcare. A minimum of 0.6 FTE is required for this position.
Essential Functions:
Clinical Decision Making and Judgment:
- Exhibits advanced clinical knowledge and proficiency in the unit's specialization.
- Coordinates comprehensive patient care within designated areas of responsibility.
- Acts as a clinical expert and resource for the staff.
- Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to identify and resolve issues in pathways, protocols, and patient care delivery.
- Effectively organizes and adjusts patient care tasks based on dynamic environmental changes.
Nurse-Patient Family Relationships:
- Delivers direct patient care that is culturally, developmentally, and ethically appropriate.
- Expertly manages care planning for complex scenarios, addressing the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs of patients and their families.
Clinical Scholarship:
- Implements and refines processes to align with AAMC's quality standards and benchmarks.
- Collaborates with unit leadership on performance improvement initiatives and practice modifications.
- Contributes to staff development activities and participates in orientation programs and staff meetings.
- Maintains membership in a professional organization related to the unit's specialty.
- Holds current certification in the specialty area.
- Promotes Evidence-Based Practice to inform nursing care and plan interventions.
Clinical Leadership:
- Enhances the skills and performance of team members by providing clear objectives, feedback, and coaching opportunities.
- Effectively allocates staff resources and organizes patient care assignments based on staff talents and organizational needs.
- Collaborative management of daily operations with other unit leaders and administrative personnel.
- Participates in reviewing and implementing Joint Commission standards as part of unit leadership.
- Encourages interdisciplinary collaboration by representing nursing in hospital-wide committees.
- Involved in setting goals and prioritizing unit initiatives.
- Handles human resource management, including staffing, performance evaluations, and development.
- Provides education and mentorship to new staff members.
- Utilizes computerized documentation for patient records effectively and serves as a resource for the team.
- Participates in fiscal management of the unit, including staff scheduling and equipment management.
Knowledge/Experience:
- Required Minimum Education: BSN
- Required Minimum Experience: 3 years as RN in a related specialty field
- Required License/Certification: Maryland RN license, BLS, and specialty certification
- Preferred: MSN
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Medium work involving lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, 30 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly. Expect some exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
