Title:  School Nurse Substitute

Purpose:  To help fulfill the mission of Hill Country Christian School by ensuring the health needs of students and faculty are properly cared for, tracked and addressed while on the school premises during the school day.

Accountability:  Reports to the Director of Operations

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience (Hourly Rate)

Qualifications:

• Must be a Christ-follower who upholds, in word and deed, the Hill Country Christian School of Austin’s Core Values and Statement of Faith.

• Must faithfully attend a church whose fundamental beliefs are in agreement with the Statement of Faith of this school.

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

• R.N. licensure

• Experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing preferred.

Responsibilities: 

• Administer basic health care and first aid for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured children, staff and school visitors.

• Responsible to communicate with emergency services, parents and appropriate staff for emergency treatment.

• Input accurate and appropriate medical information on a timely basis into the school database (e.g. immunizations, doctor diagnosis, allergies, medications, visits to the office, etc.).

• Collaborate with parents, students, health care providers, and/or the Texas Department of State Health for the purpose of promoting needed treatment, securing information, complying with legal requirements and identifying/preventing communicable diseases.

• Conduct programs and/or activities (e.g. in-service training, hearing, distance vision, immunization review, scoliosis screening, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with government mandated requirements.

• Design health maintenance plans for the purpose of addressing students' health needs and implementing health care directions from parents and/or physicians.

• Obtain, and is current on, the required Texas Board of Nursing training to keep nursing license active.

• Establish appropriate school policies relating to health issues and student interaction related to communication of germs and infectious diseases.

• Monitor all student medications administered at school as prescribed by a physician for the purpose of ensuring compliance with state laws.

• Provide annual training on blood-borne pathogens to all staff.

• Ensure communication is sent to parents at beginning of school year to facilitate the timely submission of medical history forms. Read, understand and interact with parents and/or students to ensure information on forms is clear and understood.  Interpret medical history submitted and work with students and parents for the purpose of serving as an advocate for students with identified health issues.

• Maintain accurate filing of parental health care forms and immunization records for all students for the purpose of ensuring compliance with state laws and providing information required for any transfers to other schools.

• Responsible for communication to parents and staff for communicable disease notification as well as remedies and preventive education.

• Prepare first aid kits and prescribed student medications with instructions to accompany staff on field trips and retreats.

• Prepare incident reports when injuries occur on campus that may require students or school staff to obtain further medical evaluation at an off-site facility.

• Report students with reportable contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with state and federal legal requirements.

• Respond to medical emergency situations in order to address immediate safety concerns.

• Train and supervise staff in performing specialized physical health care procedures (e.g. insulin pumps, epi pens, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that procedures that require medically related training are performed in compliance with state laws.

• Ensure the timely and accurate submission of state mandated health screening results to the Texas Department of State Health.

• Immediately report any medical situation of sufficient gravity or concern that could pose a significant risk to a student(s).

• Maintain the school nursing operations within assigned budget.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical and Environmental Requirements: 

• Must be able to communicate clearly with a wide variety of people on various issues.

• Frequently move about inside campus buildings and outside on the grounds.

• Ability to position patients as required for treatment or assessment.

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position the majority of the time using repetitive arm, hand and finger movements.

• Operate a computer the majority of the time and occasionally a copy machine.

• Frequently communicate with co-workers, students, parents and others.  Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations whether in person, via email, or telephone.

• Possible exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.
