Position summary: Responsible for mechanical engineering designs using knowledge of general engineering principles and practices to plan, organize, execute, and coordinate projects with direction as needed from the Section Head.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering calculations and assessments to determine best practice mechanical design solutions for specific applications
  • Conduct field investigations, HVAC load studies, energy modeling, code reviews
  • Produce mechanical design documents (drawings and specifications) for bidding and construction
  • Coordinate project designs with client specifications and local, city, state code requirements, including interaction with code officials and permitting offices
  • Navigate a variety of challenges in both preparing mechanical designs and assisting the Owner/Architect/Contractor with construction issues in the field
  • Assis the Project Manager on small to medium size projects having a significant mechanical design component.

Required Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills are necessary
  • Desire to participate and grow in the mechanical design role.
  • Willingness to embrace a broad range of project types and learn new requirements for a variety of mechanical systems.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative environment with internal team members and external consultants.
  • Working knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD, and building load simulation programs
  • Basic understanding and application of building, energy, and mechanical/plumbing codes

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related Engineering program
  • 5 Years, or more, of professional experience
  • Previous experience designing HVAC systems of various sizes and types is important; experience with specifying other mechanical systems such as plumbing and/or fire protection is a plus
  • Construction administration experience, or working knowledge of installation and/or maintenance of mechanical systems, would be helpful
  • Commissioning certification and/or experience is a plus
  • EIT certification, or progression towards obtaining professional engineering licensure, is preferred but not required
  • Some experience in designing Green Building certified projects (LEED, WELL Building, NetZero, Energy Star, Earthcraft, etc.) is preferred

Working Conditions

Work is predominately performed within a general office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs.) and ability to climb stairs/ladders may be required as needed.
