Job Description
With minimal supervision, uses precision mechanical measuring equipment and surface plate techniques, and optical equipment to inspect parts or assemblies to specifications, and reports and records their status. Other ancillary tasks include training less senior personnel and developing inspection procedures as required.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- Inspects mechanical parts or assemblies by gauging, using mechanical and optical instruments and comparing against engineering drawings and/or specifications to ensure compliance with specs, quality standards, and revision levels. Instruments used include verniers, micrometers, hardness testers, CMM, and test fixtures.
- Develops new or improves existing inspection methods on parts and assemblies from instructions, ingenuity, or experience.
- Partake in Supplier qualification process when required.
- Record & report the status of the inspected part or assembly to the Supervisor and/or Supervisor of department where part/assembly originated. Communicates part or system quality recommendation and problems to his or her supervisor and/or to department of manufacture supervisor.
- Responsible for managing calibration of inspection tools.
- Recommends purchase of test gages, fixtures, or instruments needed.
- Inspects and processes parts/goods returned by customers, using RMA processes.
- Assists and/or trains less senior inspectors & co-workers.
- Performs first article inspections on the floor and develops inspection criteria.
- Inspects finishing operations such as painting and plating for defects
- Ability to work with vendors to ensure finish requirements are met.
- Issue internal corrective actions and be an active member of Material Review Board.
- Assist production engineer with root cause finding, process corrective and preventative actions in Agile.
- Incoming inspection of purchased or outsourced parts.

- Ability to read and interpret all related drawings, application sheets, and work instruction sheets.
- Knowledge of Microsoft office to include Excel and Word.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Expertise with operation of standard inspection equipment for measuring precision machined parts and related measuring and calibration equipment; normally acquired in 5 or more years of previous inspection experience. Associated tables, charts, and process sheets relative to Instron inspection.
- Must lift loads of 35 pounds 20% of work time.
- Ability to work well without direct supervision or written instructions.
- Ability and desire to drive quality in the Binghamton NY facility.
