GENERAL SUMMARY:
Saginaw Public Schools Guidance Counselors are responsible for promoting and enhancing academic, personal, social, and career development of all students.

DISTRICT-WIDE PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. Knowledge of history, philosophy, and current trends in school counseling and educational systems
  2. Knowledge of the relationship of the school counseling program to the academic and student services program in the school
  3. Knowledge of strategies of leadership designed to enhance the learning environment of schools;
  4. Knowledge of the school setting, environment, and curriculum
  5. Knowledge of current issues, policies, laws, and legislation relevant to school counseling
  6. Knowledge and understanding of community, environmental, and institutional opportunities that enhance, as well as barriers that impede student academic, career, and personal/social success and overall development
  7. Knowledge of current and emerging technology in education and school counseling to assist students, families, and educators in using resources that promote informed academic, career, and personal/social choices
  8. Knowledge of prevention and crisis intervention strategies
  9. Presentation skills
  10. Skilled in conducting programs that are designed to enhance students' academic, social, emotional, career, and other developmental needs
  11. Skilled in testing and test interpretation
  12. Organizational skills
  13. Ability to keep accurate records and pay close attention to detail
  14. Ability to develop sincere understanding and relationships with others
  15. Ability to communicate with employees and other business contacts in a courteous and professional manner
  16. Ability to work in a multi-cultural, urban setting and develop a rapport with students, staff, parents and the school community
Physical Demands - While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand and/or walk, may be required to lift up to 30 lbs. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provide counseling services for all students
  2. Provide information on careers, career majors and the world of work
  3. Help students to understand the importance of good study skills and developing a good work ethic
  4. Provide information on credit and graduation requirements
  5. Use Skyward System to assist with scheduling classes for students
  6. Maintain Student Record System; monitor students' academic progress
  7. Provide information on summer programs and other opportunities
  8. Provide information on college searching
  9. Provide information on available scholarships and scholarship search web sites
  10. Provide information on community service/volunteering opportunities and other tools that will help them gain valuable experience and information regarding a future career
  11. Provide extracurricular and challenging programs and experiences
  12. Connect students with tutoring assistance/enrichment courses
  13. Provide a formal method of reflecting on and planning for experiences that will help students prepare for their next steps
  14. Coordinate and administer state and national assessments for middle and/or high school students - MEAP/MME, EXPLORE, MiPHY, CPS (ACT), PLAN (ACT), PSAT (CB), AP (CB)
  15. Assist by proctoring for state and district testing for students
  16. Provide letters of recommendation, as needed, for students applying to schools, scholarships and other programs
  17. Give tours to prospective students/families or other interested parties
  18. Meet with students based on academic and/or personal concerns
  19. Monitor/coordinate activities/meetings for 504 students
  20. Coordinate PST meetings, teacher reports, etc.
  21. Coordinate with other professionals who provide services to our students - school psychologists, social workers, teacher consultants, principals, counselors, classroom teachers, etc.
  22. Help coordinate referrals to non-school district providers of services not available through the school district
  23. Work with international student exchange organization representatives to coordinate proper placement and report progress on those placed
  24. Help coordinate or attend after-school new student orientations, open houses, recruitment sessions, financial aid night, and parent conferences
  25. Respond to coworker requests as needed
  26. Create a committee with the Building Administrators guidance to establish relationships with students and parents/families
  27. Perform other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  1. Michigan Teaching Certificate with a Guidance and Counseling (NT) endorsement
  2. Successful classroom teaching desirable (at least five years)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Attend any training as mandated by the State or the Building Administrator

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. School environment where there is no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust or the like
  2. Noise level in this environment may be moderate to loud

None

METHOD OF EVALUATION:
The Building Administrator evaluates this position every year. The evaluation form is available from the Human Resources and Labor Relations Department.
