UPMC Hamot is hiring a Professional Staff Nurse to join the TNICU

We are looking for an experienced, caring, compassionate, team-oriented nurse with a passion for learning who excels in critical thinking

The TNICU is a 16-bed unit on the second floor of the patient care tower. The exceptional care provided in this unit contributes to UPMC Hamot’s certification as a Level II Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center. Some of our specific patient populations include:

  • Trauma
  • Surgical
  • Kidney Transplants
  • Neurosurgery
  • Hemorrhagic Strokes requiring Neurointervention

The TNICU stands as a beacon of hope and healing for those facing critical traumatic, surgical & neurological challenges, delivering world-class care with compassion and dedication.

At least 2 years of ICU nursing experience required.

Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience.

Overview: The Professional Staff Nurse, a Registered Nurse, plays a crucial role in the care delivery team. They set the standards for care quality and are accountable for nursing care provision. This role involves managing patient care for groups of patients and their families, using independent judgment, communication, and teamwork. Key aspects of the role include leadership, partnership, collaboration, and supervision. The nurse builds and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Additionally, they show a strong commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

Responsibilities:

  • Relationship Building: Maintains productive internal and external relationships, demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment. Understands cultural differences and promotes healthy relationships. Balances work and personal life, models safe work hours, and reports safety hazards.

  • Education and Teaching: Applies adult learning principles in teaching patients, families, students, and new staff. Provides detailed guidance for care transitions and supports the development of new staff and students. Encourages open dialogue and continuous improvement.

  • Patient Care: Uses the nursing process within Relationship-Based Care to create a healing environment. Sets daily goals and plans of care with patients, considering their holistic needs. Demonstrates critical thinking and effective communication, ensuring comprehensive documentation and alignment with safety and quality goals.

  • Professional Development: Engages in professional development to enhance practice quality. Participates in shared governance, goal setting, and supports change processes. Acts as a full partner on the care team, adapting to change and improving patient care.

  • Quality Improvement: Participates in quality improvement efforts, identifies opportunities for improvement, and takes responsibility for enhancing patient satisfaction. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to improve clinical care and influences patient care plans.

  • Experience: At least 2 years of ICU nursing experience (BSN preferred).

  • Understand principles of growth and development across the lifespan. Demonstrate knowledge and skills for age-appropriate care and interactions.

  • Assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs. Provide care according to department policies and procedures.

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, support staff, other departments, and patients/families.

  • Work productively and effectively in a complex environment with multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.

  • Exhibit good clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Lead others in applying the nursing process using critical thinking skills.

  • Maintain mobility, visual manual dexterity, and physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and positioning of patients.

  • Flexible work options available, including night and weekend shifts with premium pay (requires at least 6 months of nursing experience and may involve orientation during regular business hours). Inform recruiter if interested during the interview process.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire or transfer.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.

  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) within 6 months of hire or transfer.

  • Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)

  • Act 34

  • UPMC approved national certification preferred.

*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
