JOB TITLE: Highways & Streets Maintenance Supervisor PW06/NE13
DEPARTMENT: Public Works, City of Waycross
JOB SUMMARY: Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff; handles employee concerns and problems; directs work; counsels and disciplines staff; completes employee performance appraisals; recruits, appoints, and trains staff. Responsible for performing welding and general labor duties to facilitate department processes.
WORKING HOURS: Employees will be required to start work at 7:00 AM and work until 4:00 PM Monday through Friday. Employees will also receive a one (1) hour lunch break that begins at 12:00 and ends at 1:00 PM.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Assists superintendent in the scheduling and documentation of work; completes daily work reports; ensures that operators complete daily vehicle and equipment inspection reports.
- Assists in developing program improvements; investigates citizen complaints and incidents; monitors and maintains inventory control; collects information for report preparation; responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Assist the Street Superintendent in preparing reports and documents of work in progress and completion; prepare monthly and quarterly reports and highlights.
- Attends safety training and bureau and department meetings; assists in the training of equipment operators and workers.
- Responds to emergency situations during and after normal work hours; serves as a member of the critical workforce for disaster response situations.
- May be required to take calls on a limited basis.
- Operates equipment such as forklift, backhoe, front-end loader and grader or any other Public Works equipment.
- Answers the office telephone and takes messages.
- Prepares and maintains daily work logs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to supervise and perform street and drainage system maintenance duties as well as welding and minor repairs. Successful performance helps ensure a safe and attractive environment for city residents.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, department heads, other city employees, elected and appointed officials, engineers, consultants, architects, business owners, developers, and members of the public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, and occasional inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has supervision over managers throughout the Public Works department. During the absence of the Public Works Director, the Superintendent may be responsible for the entire Public Works department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:- Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of and maintain a valid Class A CDL with no restrictions issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
