Summary

The fabricator/welder apprentice will assemble, join, fabricate, and repair metal and other material by applying appropriate welding techniques. He/she will interpret blueprints, specifications, diagrams, or schematics to determine an appropriate welding process. In addition, they provide the maintenance of assembled equipment, analyze it, and ensure any issues are dealt with accordingly. To ensure quality, the apprentice will inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness. This position is non-exempt.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Produces components by assembling parts and subassemblies
  • Reads and deciphers schematics, blueprints, and assembly instructions
  • Uses hand tools or machines to assemble parts.
  • Design, fabricate, join, fit/tack, and repair equipment, fixtures and various types of metal objects and structures using various welding techniques.
  • Operate drill presses, power saws, grinders and a variety of welding equipment and hand tools.
  • Welds components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Analyzes plans, drawings, work samples, specifications, and work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of welding assignments/techniques.

  • Have knowledge of welding techniques, tools and equipment.
  • Use proper safety and protective equipment utilized during welding assignments
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, and various forms of instrumentation
  • Prior experience with metal fabrication
  • Mechanical and technical skills
  • Skills in the fabrication, joining and repair of a variety of metal objects, equipment, fixtures and structures.
  • Strong math skills required to be used in measuring the work process.
Education and Experience
  • Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • May be required to complete an apprenticeship and/or formal training in area of specialty. May require 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
Abilities Required:

1. Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of material, methods, tools and equipment.

3. Demonstrated ability to work in poor lighting, heating and ventilation.

4. Demonstrated ability to work in extreme hot and cold conditions.

5. Demonstrated ability to work in dirty and noisy areas.

6. Demonstrated ability to operate hand and power tools.

7. Demonstrated ability to interpret blueprints.

8. Demonstrated ability to sketch schematics.

9. Demonstrated ability to work in tight places.

10. Demonstrated ability to lift moderately heavy objects (50-90 pounds).

11. Demonstrated ability to do excessive walking, standing, bending and stooping.

12. Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
