Head Start Teacher Assistant/Family Advocate

Primary Responsibilities: 1. Ensure compliance with Head Start s Parent, Family, Community, Engagement (PFCE) Performance Standards. 2. Meet scheduled deadlines and perform routine tasks with minimal supervision. 3. Establish connections with community agencies to support family/agency needs. 4. Ensure collaborative problem solving with families, staff, and community partners. 5. Build relationships with families based on mutual trust and rapport. 6. Respect the diverse values and cultures of the families served. 7. Recognize and identify each family s risk and protective factors. 8. Establish professional roles and boundaries with families. 9. Provide families with home visits/contacts as needed or required by the agency. 10. Recognize importance of relationship building to constructively coach families through SMART goal setting. 11. Facilitate parent/guardian involvement in the program. 12. Facilitate the delivery of services of children and families through collaboration with community partners. 13. Complete and maintain documentation in a timely and accurate manner. 14. Exhibit flexibility in day-to-day operations to provide needed services to families and classroom staff (subbing and event planning). 15. Actively participate in two-way communication among co-workers to ensure all staff are informed of pertinent information as it pertains to the well-being of the families. 16. Recognize the importance of time management and being prepared to work with families. 17. Assist in the identification and recruitment of Head Start eligible families and children, including children with disabilities and underserved populations. 18. Assist families in completing required paperwork. 19. Plan age-appropriate activities and experiences with the teacher. 20. Provide rich interactions with children. Examples of these include: Facilitate students learning through open ended questioning; participate in interactive play on the floor; provide interesting and creative materials; create opportunities for children to predict, experiment, and evaluate; focus their attention during discussions. 21. Help observe and document children s progress toward School Readiness Goals by writing observations based on the Teaching Strategies Gold (TSG) objectives. 22. When in the classroom, keep the room safe and clean. 23. When in the classroom, work with individual children and small groups to support their social, emotional & intellectual growth. 24. Become comfortable teaching a lesson or overseeing a group activity at least once a week. 25. When in the classroom, check teacher s daily lesson plans and be able to follow them. 26. When in the classroom, follow the assistant s daily protocol as described in general descriptions. 27. Maintain a professional relationship with school staff, office staff, and parents/guardians. 28. In the absence of the teacher, be able to be the assistant or lead teacher. 29. When in the classroom, document attendance daily. Contact families within 1 hour if child is absent. Document absence reason and attempts to contact parents in ChildPlus. 30. Assist students with toileting. 31. During large group, be the primary staff to redirect misbehavior. 32. Analyze program data. 33. Mandatory attendance at staff meetings/trainings. 34. Dependable attendance; contact supervisor immediately if absent.
