Job Description:

JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Charge RN and the Director of Clinical Operations, the Infusion RN will be responsible for the coordination and delivery of quality patient care. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to administration of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and biotherapy medications by multiple routes, insertion of peripheral IV's, management of central access devices, patient assessment, symptom management and patient and caregiver education. The RN will be a patient advocate and will serve as a liaison between patients, staff and physicians.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of Accredited Nursing Program, BSN preferred.
  • Current California RN license
  • Current certification in BLS and/or ALS
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Card preferred (required within 1 year of employment)
  • OCN preferred
  • Previous Oncology Nursing experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledge of chemotherapeutic/biologic agents.
  • Assessment skills with a strong understanding of common side effects and supportive care measures.
  • IV insertion skills and experience with management/troubleshooting a variety of central access devices.
  • Time management and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills and experience with Electronic Medical Records.
  • Excellent communication skills
PHYSICAL FACTORS/REQUIREMENTS:

The physical abilities required of this position may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Vision sufficient to read handwritten, typed and computer documents throughout the shift
  • Speech and hearing sufficient to receive and communicate detailed information clearly by phone and in person
  • Motor skills sufficient to handle, use or operate computer terminal, fax machine, copier, telephone, needles, IV,
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to use a variety of hand held tools and to manipulate single sheets of paper and/or file materials
  • Physical ability to reach, lift, and bend to retrieve and/or file materials
  • Physical ability to sit, stand or otherwise remain stationary at work post for long periods of time
  • Physical ability to lift and carry 20 lbs.
  • Physical ability to walk up and down one flight of stairs and between patient
ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:
  • Demonstrates an understanding of cancer biology, the cell cycle and the impact of chemotherapy, biotherapy and immunotherapy.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of patient centered care with the ability to integrate this into the nursing process.
  • Management of patients receiving treatment for solid tumors, hematological malignancy and benign hematological conditions.
  • IV insertion, management/troubleshooting a variety of central venous access devices.
  • Recognizes and reviews appropriate lab tests/values for administration of and departments throughout the day.
  • individual drugs and regimens.
  • Identifies appropriate tests required for the safe administration of chemotherapy
  • Adhere to organizational policy and procedure/ONS/OSHA standards for safe handling and administration of cytotoxic agents. Utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Administration of chemotherapy, biotherapy and immunologic agents.
  • Recognizes and manages oncologic emergencies according to organizational policy and procedure and evidence based care.
  • Utilizes appropriate skills and techniques when communicating members of the Nursing team and other PCC employees.
  • Utilizes therapeutic communication skills when engaging in difficult conversations with patients, caregivers or other members of the PCC team.
  • Complete and thorough documentation of nursing care and other pertinent information in a timely fashion.
  • Ability to organize time/duties to facilitate effective and efficient patient care.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Demonstrates understanding of the importance of teamwork for the provision of high-quality care.
  • Delegates appropriately with attention to scope of practice.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills and abilities in managing the nursing care of patients across the disease trajectory.
  • Provides holistic nursing care addressing the physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of cultural diversity and integrates this when planning patient care.
  • Provides education appropriate to the needs of the patient and family.
  • Ability to identify and discuss appropriate resources for patients and their families including but not limited to; clinical trial eligibility/availability, genetic counseling, survivorship and palliative care.
  • Makes referrals to outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Fiscal awareness and responsibility in oncology nursing practice
  • Demonstrates an understanding of billing department process and need for business office authorization for regimens/treatment.
  • Demonstrates and understanding of procedure codes and the importance of accuracy in documentation.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the financial impact of cancer and cancer treatment on patients and families. Identifies assistance programs and refers as appropriate.
  • Regular attendance at PCC Staff meetings and RN meetings.
  • Ability to identify learning needs and seek educational opportunities as appropriate.
