Position: Behavior Technician
Reports to: Special Education Director/Classroom Teacher/Building Principal
CEA Union: Starting Rate of Pay - $16.48 plus $6.00 shift differential = $22.48/hr.
Summary of Position: The BT assists special education and building staff in meeting the needs of students with complex instructional, communication, social-emotional, and behavioral needs. The primary focus is to assist and enhance the educational process of students with complex needs in both instructional and non-instructional activities. To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and /or ability required.
Job Requirements:
- Current State of Illinois Paraprofessional (Aide) Approval, Educator License with Stipulations, Professional Educator License, or Substitute License.
- Completion of State of Illinois Registered Behavior Technician Coursework or Cerification
- Assigned to a high needs classroom/program.
- Participates in the District BCBA cohort (1 meeting per month)
- Have the ability to work effectively with children, especially students with complex needs.
- Have the ability to function within the framework of the school environment.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others; including the ability to provide professional development, coaching, and mentorship
- Working knowledge of:
- General principles, methods, equipment and techniques of behavior intervention services, including behavior management and positive reinforcement
- Strengths, needs, and supports of students with special needs, as well as an understanding of eligibility and diagnosis.
- Child growth and development.
- General knowledge of special education processes, procedures, policies and mandates
- Operation of therapeutic and adaptive equipment
- Strong oral and written communication
- Record keeping, data collection, data analysis, and report writing
- Health and safety regulations
- Must maintaining positive, professional and collaborative communication and interactions with staff, students and the community
- Word, Excel, Google and basic computer programs.
- Child guidance principles, practices, classroom procedures and appropriate conduct.
- Provide behavior intervention services to increase and improve skills and functional abilities of students assigned under the direction of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).
- Monitor progress and reassess skill development and determine appropriate support and action with clearly defined guidelines.
- Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans under the direction of BCBA/Teacher/Therapist in accordance with the student's identified needs, IEP or Section 504 plan.
- Set up, operate, adjust and demonstrate therapeutic and adaptive equipment.
- Prepare, enter, maintain various student records, reports and individual case notes.
- Collaborate with BCBAs, Teachers, or Therapists with gathering assessment data.
- Collaborate with BCBA, Teachers, or Therapists in creating a skill acquisition plan for the student and implement procedures to support the student's acquisition of the desired skill.
- Collaborate with BCBA, Teachers, or Therapists in creating a behavior reduction plan and implement interventions and differential reinforcement procedures.
- Monitor progress and support sensory-motor development and other identified developmental needs using a variety of tools; evaluate needs and progress toward goals; monitor and adjust individual programs as needed.
- Contribute to the evaluation process under the direction of the Board Certified Behavior Analyst. .
- Communicate with staff, teachers, parents and administrators to implement new and improved student skills into daily activities, extend therapeutic activities to the classroom and home, exchange information and resolve issues or concerns related to the student's IEP.
- Perform such other tasks and other responsibilities as the Special Services Department Administrator, or designee, may assign in accordance with Board of Education policies and procedures.
- Works with students individually or in small groups in academic studies, basic life skills and other assigned instruction. Reinforces information/instructions following a lesson.
- Assists individual or groups of students during activities including recess, lunch and getting children safely on and off the bus.
- Assist with hygiene and toileting activities which might include transferring and lifting students. Sanitize classroom and equipment using approved materials.
- Maintains confidentiality at all times.
Physical Ability: While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and run. The employee will experience occasional lifting and or moving up to 100 lbs, such as lifting a child from the floor. The employee must be able to push/pull items up to 80 lbs., such as children in wheelchairs.
Work Environment: Hazards- Potential exposure to communicable disease and contact with blood and other body fluids; potential exposure to physical injury from aggressive behavior.
