The annual base salary for this position ranges from $166,100.00 in our lowest geographic market to $392,700.00 in our highest geographic market. Actual salary will vary based on a candidate's location, qualifications, skills and experience.

Who are we looking for

We are seeking a Senior Principal Architect with a strong engineering background to unify the Geographies and Marketplace Engineering (GaME) teams and drive excellence in cloud strategies, operations, efficiencies, and engineering best practices.

This role will focus on fostering collaboration across Application Engineering, SRE, Platform Engineering, Infrastructure, and Product and Program leadership teams. The objective is to define and implement cloud computing strategies while designing, planning, and managing scalable, secure, and cost-effective cloud infrastructures. By aligning major cloud technology decisions, this position will enable exceptional experiences for athletes and support the long-term realization of Nike’s tech strategy.

The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in team building, collaboration, and facilitation of architecture in a large, multinational Fortune 500 enterprise. Expertise in developing branded experiences across web, mobile, voice, and interactive channels using cloud infrastructure is essential. A deep understanding of global product development, manufacturing, and distribution processes is critical. Additional strengths include expertise in enterprise architecture, technology strategy, and leadership roles in architecture or CTO functions within startups or mid-sized companies.

  • Goal is to establish Strategic Cloud Design and Planning

  • Develop Strategic Vision: Define the long-term cloud strategy and architecture roadmap aligned with business goals.

  • Architect Scalable Solutions: Design scalable and high-performance cloud architectures that can handle future growth and evolving business needs.

  • Lead Cloud Transformation Initiatives: Oversee and guide major cloud transformation projects, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.

  • Advanced Solution Design and Implementation

  • Design Complex Architectures: Create sophisticated cloud solutions involving multi-cloud and hybrid cloud environments.

  • Innovate & Optimize: Leverage cutting-edge technologies, best practices to enhance cloud solutions, improve performance and optimize costs.

  • Ensure High Availability and Disaster Recovery: Architect solutions with robust HADR strategies to ensure minimal downtime and data protection.

  • Lead Cloud Teams: Guide and manage a team of cloud engineers and architects, providing technical leadership and support.

  • Mentor and Train: Mentor junior cloud architects and engineers, sharing expertise and promoting best practices.

  • Facilitate Knowledge Sharing: Encourage and facilitate knowledge sharing within the team to build a culture of continuous learning.

  • Performance Monitoring and Optimization

  • Establish Monitoring and Reporting: Set up and oversee comprehensive monitoring solutions to track performance, availability & resource utilization.

  • Optimize Resource Usage: Analyze performance data and optimize resource allocation to achieve cost-efficiency and high performance.

  • Implement Performance Tuning: Fine-tune cloud systems and applications to improve responsiveness and scalability

  • Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Engage with Stakeholders: Work closely with business leaders, product managers, and other stakeholders to understand their requirements and translate them into cloud solutions.

  • Facilitate Cross-Departmental Coordination: Coordinate with different departments to ensure that cloud solutions integrate well with existing systems and processes.

  • Communicate Technical Concepts: Clearly articulate complex cloud concepts and strategies to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Cloud Migration and Integration

  • Develop and execute migration strategies.

  • Oversee integration with existing systems and optimize post-migration.

  • Risk Management and Problem Solving

  • Identify and mitigate risks; troubleshoot complex issues.

  • Governance and Best Practices

  • Establish Governance Frameworks: Develop and enforce cloud governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure consistency and compliance.

  • Promote Best Practices: Advocate for and implement cloud best practices and standards across the organization.

  • Continuous Improvement

  • Stay Updated on Trends: Keep abreast of the latest cloud technologies, industry trends, and best practices.

  • Drive Innovation: Introduce new technologies and approaches to improve cloud infrastructure and operations.

Who will you work with:

All consumer-facing engineering teams: this role will work with Application Engineering, SRE, Platform Engineering and Enterprise Architecture teams along with engineering management and key development leaders to deliver products to market quickly, efficiently, and reliably.

Product and Program management across Nike: this role and team play a pivotal role in defining technology direction and solution alternatives to deliver products to market in alignment with Nike’s platform strategy while meeting business and market requirements. This role will be responsible for outlining dependencies for integration, technical evolution, engineering, and operation of existing/new solutions.

The Global Architecture team, this role is a critical member of the domain architecture function defining end-to-end GaME architecture and technology strategy across Nike.

What you bring:

  • Strategic leader with a preferred 15+ years of experience in hands on software engineering in a large enterprise/matrixed environment.

  • 7+ practical experience with AWS architecting, designing, supporting cloud infrastructure and applications with a strong technical background: large-scale distributed architecture, cloud, cloud-native, big data, vertical-based digital transformation, AI/ML, etc.

  • Translating business needs into prioritized technology features and requirements, solution analysis, value chain definition, planning and road mapping. Ability to drive collective decisions, influence others, and maintain trust and credibility.

  • Deep understanding & a strong hands-on experience of Cloud Native architecture that includes design principles, microservices, containerization, serverless computing , Kubernetes, networking, data storage, routing, caching & DevOps practices.

  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native development frameworks and tools, such as AWS services like RDS, Lambda, SNS, SQS, Dynamo DB, ElastiCache, Cognito, etc

  • In-depth knowledge of Enterprise cloud security best practices, encryption methods, identity, and access management (IAM).

  • Design security into all projects and processes for design, implementation, and operational stages. Ensure end-to-end Observability within Applications, Networks and Infrastructure.

  • Hands-on experience with web, mobile & interactive technologies at global scale.

Education And Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, software engineering, or related field of study or any combination of equivalent experience, education, and training.

  • AWS cloud architecture (AWS Solutions Architecture) Or AWS DevOps Engineer certification is required

  • Certifications in cloud technologies Azure, or GCP is a plus

  • Retail background is preferred with high professional standards for self & others.
