Position Summary: The Health Officer, under the direction of the Program Director, is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of campers and staff. The health officer will log medical records and treatment provided for campers and staff.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the health and safety of campers and staff who need first aid or who are hurt on the campgrounds.
  • Ensure that the health office supplies are adequately stocked at all times, communicating with the Program Director any needs
  • Log medical records and medications for campers and staff
  • Pass medication to campers and staff as required
  • Assist with and participate in pre-camp training for staff
  • Effectively communicate and log any medical issues and problems as they occur to the Program Director
  • Monitor and evaluate camp procedures, facilities, and conditions to be able to suggest modifications that would create more healthful conditions in the camp
  • Ensure that all aspects of the camper experience are conducted in a compliant fashion for The Salvation Army "Safe From Harm"
  • The camp health officer is responsible for the camper's check-in for their particular camping session to see that they have a completed medical history form and a signed emergency authorization and shall conduct a health screening to include:
    • The checking in of prescription and nonprescription drugs and medications.
    • A review of the health history statement.
    • A discussion with the camper concerning current health needs.
    • An observation of the camper's physical state, paying particular attention to potential contagious diseases and possible signs of abuse.
    • Check campers for lice.
    • Report any significant problems to the child's counselor and any dietary needs to the food service manager or head cook.
  • Report any accidents requiring a doctor's care to the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director as soon as possible. The health officer should be involved in daily informal observation of all children to ascertain their physical condition and recommend any action to be taken when problems are discovered
  • For all treatment provided and medications given it is imperative to keep accurate and complete medical logs for campers and staff. When illness is discovered, the health officer must make every effort to implement a plan to prevent further spread to other children and staff. Any camper may be excused or kept from activities at the health officer's direction for medical reasons
  • Prepare any remaining medications for return to the agency representative at the child's departure. Assist in the early departure of any camper as outlined in the Emergency Procedure & Camp Policies section, Camper Release Plan found in the staff manual.
  • The health officer should obtain the authorization of the camp director or his designate before attempting any parental notification. The health officer may contact Emergency Service Providers in any situation deemed necessary to ensure prompt response in a time of emergency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma / GED, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • 18 years of age or older
  • Possess one of the following:
    • Valid physician's licensed
    • Valid licensed physician's assistant
    • Valid licensed nurse practitioner
    • Valid registered nurse
    • Valid licensed practical nurse
    • Valid licensed emergency medical technician
    • Valid licensed medical first responder
    • An adult who is currently certified as a wilderness first responder
      • Or has met the requirements equivalent to those set forth by the National Outdoor Leadership School manual number 16175.

    • An adult who has satisfactorily completed training and certification that is equivalent to community first aid and CPR for the professional rescuer requirements in the American Red Cross manual number 656137.
    • An adult who is licensed in another state or Canadian province as a physician, physician's assistant, nurse, or emergency medical technician.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

Computer Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office 365
  • Working knowledge of TEAMS and SharePoint
  • Basic computer skills
  • Willingness to learn new software as needed

Certificates and Licenses:

  • Have and maintain current First Aid / CRP certification
  • Complete Safe From Harm training, and keep current as needed
  • Must have and maintain a current valid driver's license and pass the Salvation Army Motor Vehicle Record check (MVR)
