Prosthetic Orthotic Certified Technician Pedorthist provide technical implementation of tasks and services associated with the support of patient care. They have authorization to fit standard and custom fit devices, according to the prescription. They also assist in obtaining proper documentation and insurance authorization for services provided. The profession of pedorthics is the provision of patient care conducted by or under the direction and supervision of an ABC Certified Pedorthist to provide the application of a pedorthic device for the prevention or improvement of painful or disabling conditions of the foot and ankle. Prosthetic Orthotic Certified Technician Pedorthist typically work under the supervision of and in consultation with practitioners. Fabricate, repair, and maintain devices to provide maximum fit and function for patient needs. Customize and modify devices by trimming and adjusting, as well as working with metals and plastic materials. Conduct final fitting of devices for patients. Continue to keep abreast of and learn how to use new fabricating techniques of pertinent materials. If an ABC Certified Pedorthist, then they are specifically educated and trained to manage comprehensive pedorthic patient care. May participate in the supervision of others, as well as inspecting work of trainees and technicians. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma required Experience: Two years qualified experience under the supervision of an American Board for Certification (ABC) certified practitioner or registered technician. Licensure: A formal technician training certificate from an National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) accredited program. Licensure will supplement for less experience than as defined above. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires sitting/standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping/traveling (distance: 1 – 2 miles/day), climbing (ladder, steps) and reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive). Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 – 50lbs. This position may be exposed to electric current while working on electronic equipment, exposed to extreme temperatures in steam tunnels and required to stand on different surfaces.
