RAMC is looking for Nurse Interns

12 Hours per week

Schedule Varies: 7A-7P or 7P-7A

Position Summary:
• The Nurse Intern (NI) is a nursing student who is currently enrolled in a nursing program leading to a Registered Nurse, or who has failed the licensure exam and is awaiting a re-take of the exam and will then be identified as a Nurse Technician.
• The Nurse Intern always functions under the DIRECT and PRESENT supervision of the RN.
• Under s. N6.02 (6), Wisconsin Administrative Code, direct supervision means immediate availability to continually coordinate, direct and inspect at first hand the practice of another. This has been interpreted by the Board to require that the supervising RN must be in the same facility as the nurse intern.
• Under s. N6.03 (3), Wisconsin Administrative Code, the supervising RN may delegate acts within the scope of professional nursing to the nurse intern, provided the RN does the following:

  • Delegates tasks commensurate with educational preparation and demonstrated abilities of the nurse intern;
  • Provides direction and assistance to the nurse intern;
  • Observes and monitors the activities of the nurse intern; and,
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of acts performed by the nurse intern.

• The Nurse Intern/Nurse Technician is not licensed to practice nursing either as a Registered Nurse or LPN (unless also licensed as such). The nurse intern performs tasks delegated to him or her by the RN under direct supervision as defined in the Wisconsin Administrative Code. While task or procedures may be delegated to the nurse intern the functions of assessment and evaluation may not, including the preparation or alteration of a plan of care. The nurse intern may assist the RN in these functions, but may not perform them in their entirety.

Education and Training Required:
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Active certification as a nursing assistant (CNA) preferred.
• The student nurse will be in their fourth (4 th) semester of a two year Associate Degree of Nursing (ADN) program or in the fourth (4th) year of a four year Bachelors Degree of Nursing (BSN) program.
• Completion of basic clinical skills as required by their current nursing program.
• Graduate nurses who receive notification of failure of State Boards shall practice under the position description (NT).
• CPR certification (BLS)

⚬Occasionally lift up to 50 pounds while transferring and positioning patients and maneuvering equipment while using gait belts and transfer devices.

⚬Occasionally push and pull up to 25 pounds for transporting patients and moving equipment.

⚬Occasionally bend to the floor, squat, kneel, crouch and reach overhead to assist with patient care or retrieve equipment or supplies.

⚬Occasionally handle objects, smell, feel control knobs, switches and levers.

⚬Frequently carry objects weighing 10 pounds or less.

⚬Occasionally carry objects weighing 11 - 15 pounds.
• Sight:

⚬During a normal work shift, is able to use all sight capacities, including spatial, peripheral and depth perception, near and far vision, colors and accommodation while reviewing patient records, computer screens, gauges on patient equipment, monitors, etc.
• Cognition/Communication:⚬Continually utilizes simple reading skills, normal conversations.

⚬Occasional exposure to simpler writing skills and basic math functions.

⚬Frequently is exposed to low-volume speech with patients and telephone conversations with other members of the healthcare team, physicians and family members.
• Environmental Conditions:⚬Continual exposure to an inside, patient environment with occasional unpleasant odors or noises.

⚬Occasional exposure to low light or glare conditions.
• Potential Hazards:

⚬Occasional exposure to infectious blood/body fluids and diseases requiring infection control practices.

⚬Occasional exposure to needles, syringes/sharps during medication administration, assistance with treatments and invasive procedures.⚬

May handle hazardous drugs.
