In accordance with the Explore Community School mission and values, the Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for providing direct services to students identified with a speech or language impairment. The Speech Language Pathologist supports students in grades K-8 by screening, evaluating, diagnosing and treating disorders of speech and language communication. These disorders of speech and language communication may include difficulties with articulation, fluency, voice, verbal and written language, auditory comprehension, and cognitive communication. He/she will develop and execute specific components of a speech and language program as specified in an individualized educational plan (IEP) as well as interact and collaborate with outsourced clinical providers who provide additional services to our students.

To achieve our mission we emphasize interactive, hands-on, project-based learning to build upon our rigorous, standards-based curriculum and ensure learning is authentic, meaningful, and fun. We focus on the whole child, nurturing the social and emotional development of Explorers while fostering their academic excellence.

Currently serving 550+ students in K-8, we anticipate growing to 700 students over the next several years. Explore occupies a beautiful new facility in Nashville; a 90,000 square foot building constructed in 2019 in partnership with the city of Nashville as a key component in the new Envision Cayce development. Explore Community School is an educational outreach of the Martha O’Bryan Center, Nashville’s oldest anti-poverty nonprofit that has been serving the city and Davidson County for over 100 years.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Provide direct treatment to target goals in student’s speech production, vocal production, and language deficits
• Deliver pre-referral speech/language interventions in Tier 1 and Tier 2
• Document and collect data on all consultation sessions and provide regular assessments to monitor student progress
• Conduct student screenings and/or assessments of language, voice, fluency, articulation or hearing
• Develop and implement high quality, legally compliant individualized education plans (IEPs)
• Write high quality evaluation and reevaluation reports
• Maintain student files and treatment logs in an organized manner to include as well as provide appropriate documentation to the interdisciplinary team
• Attend and participate in meetings as required (IEP, Exceptional Education, Professional Development, etc.)
• Provide a loving, exciting, joyful learning environment for speech and language services
• Complete other school related duties as assigned (i.e. supporting arrival, dismissal, lunch or recess, etc.)
• Develop instructional materials and evaluate commercially available material for treatment
• Keep current on the latest development in the field of speech therapy by attending professional seminars, reading current literature and participating in professional organization as assigned.
• Provide support and training to school staff and families regarding the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices
• Manage time efficiently, follow schedule and inform appropriate personnel of departures from schedule.

Preferred Skills, Experience, and Characteristics
• Evident passion for Explore’s mission, matched with a strong work ethic, and a belief that all students, including those with special needs, can achieve academic success
• Valid Speech/Language endorsement in Tennessee (498)
• Bachelors Degree in related field, Masters Degree preferred
• Prior school experience preferred, including development of IEPs
• Committed to thoughtfully engaging in identity work necessary to take a culturally responsive approach to pedagogy and relationship-building with students and colleagues
• Strong organizational skills with unrelenting attention to detail and follow-through
• Possess the energy and willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure success
