Job Description

POSITION TITLE: School Nurse

JOB GOAL: To maintain the school health room and ensure an efficient school nurse program within the school where assigned. Serve as a health advocate for students and their families.

REPORTS TO: School Principal and Federal Programs Director

SUPERVISES: N/A

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Demonstrates success in appropriately detecting and assessing student health problems.
  2. Identifies and appropriately responds to students who require special health services at school.
  3. Complies with the Nurse Practice Act and Enterprise City Schools' Nurse Policy Manual.
  4. Complies with the Enterprise City School System's reporting and recording procedures for documentation of student health information.
  5. Honors code of confidentiality with students and families.
  6. Maintains open communication with students, families, faculty, and staff members, school administration and the community.
  7. Promotes and assists families in obtaining appropriate health care for their children.
  8. Serves as a health advocate for students and the school community.
  9. Implements and/or supervises health program activities such as vision, hearing, spinal, height, weight, asthma and scoliosis screening, medication administration and documentation, immunization assessment and follow-up.
  10. Monitors to ensure compliance with the immunization laws and guidelines as issued from the Alabama State Department of Health.
  11. Assesses and manages all communicable health problems in the school population to include but limited to influenza, chickenpox, head lice, scabies, and impetigo.
  12. Report communicable diseases to the Coffee County or Alabama State Department of Health after obtaining written permission from the parent.
  13. Demonstrates and teaches faculty members, staff and students the importance and techniques of infection control measures, including hand washing education and the practice of universal precautions as needed, but at least annually.
  14. Develops, implements, and periodically evaluates medical waste management plans.
  15. Participates in faculty and staff professional development activities when appropriate.
  16. Visits students and families in the home environment to assess, detect, and manage health concerns and problems as needed.
  17. Counsels with students and their families concerning problems such as school age pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and alcohol and other drug use in order to facilitate responsible decision making practices.
  18. Serves as a resource for pregnant and parenting teens to assist in successful school completion and healthy outcomes for teens and babies.
  19. Obtains, at a minimum, the contact hours in nursing continuing education to maintain a current Alabama nursing license.
  20. Conducts health related classroom instruction and presentations according to scheduled and established guidelines.
  21. Provides emergency first aid in compliance with the Enterprise City School System's procedures.
  22. Serves to assist in emergency/crisis situations within the school system.
  23. Assists with providing nurse services to other school health rooms as needed or requested.
  24. Serves as a resource person upon request at school or community meetings (such Disaster Relief, Pandemic Flu, etc).
  25. Performs all other duties as specified by the principal, Federal Programs Director and the Superintendent.
