Primary Purpose:

Provides therapeutic support for children, adolescents and families experiencing social, behavioral, or emotional issues that interfere with academic success. Perform casework service to help students resolve personal, emotional, and social problems that interfere with their adjustment to school and their ability to enjoy the benefits of the educational process. Will employ therapeutic interventions with individuals, families, and groups, as well as provide crisis counseling and case management services. Will facilitate communication between the school, student, community and family to encourage positive working relationships to help meet the needs of the individual student to be successful in school.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certificate

Master's degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program preferred

Valid Texas Social Worker license

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) preferred

Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50) paid by employee.

Required Experience:

Two (2) years' previous experience in social work preferred

Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of individual and group counseling skills

Knowledge and skill in casework methods

Strong consultation skills for conferencing with teachers, parents, and students

Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies, including behavior management interventions

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents, and district staff

Bilingual (Spanish/English) capability preferred

Communication and Community Relations

The social worker promotes a positive tone for school or community relations through activities such as the following:
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to encourage peer support and enhance social development of students including developing the ability to accept responsibility for their actions, resolve conflicts, develop decision-making skills, and handle crises. Work with students to improve attendance.
  • Perform casework service with parents to increase the parents' understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child's problems and their knowledge and use of available and appropriate resources.
  • Provide crisis support and counseling to students, parents, and school staff.
  • Work closely with administration, teachers, psychological services, and external agencies to provide on-going support services to meet the emotional, social, and academic needs of students and their families most effectively.
  • Provide specialized groups within schools to meet specific needs of students as needed (e.g.: Grief & Loss, Anger Management/Aggression Replacement, Positive Peer Relationships, and Healthy Choices).
  • Facilitate communication between school personnel and students, parents, and the community.
  • Refer school staff and parents to community resources.
  • Facilitate parent support/education classes for the district.
  • Develop and conduct parenting training and support groups.
  • Consult with parents regarding their children's academic performance, behavior, and needs.
  • Inform students and parents of their rights and responsibilities under federal and state law including compulsory attendance.
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Coordinate and integrate school and community resources and refer school staff and parents to community resources where appropriate
Organization Management

The social worker manages administrative, fiscal, and facilities functions responsibly through activities such as the following:
  • Identify and explore causes of students' dysfunction as it relates to the home, school, and community including making home visits to gather information relating to students. Arrange for medical, psychiatric, and other tests and examinations that may disclose causes of difficulties and indicate remedial measures.
  • Identify and explore causes of student's dysfunction as it relates to the home, school, and community.
  • Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level and interests of students.
  • Support campus goals of prevention to maintain a healthy and safe school environment.
  • Implement existing and new programs and services with fidelity.
  • Develop and maintain effective individual and group relationships with students and parents.
  • Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of social work services and make changes based on the findings.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other required documents.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  • Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain all reports, records, and other required documents (e.g.: referrals, assessments, diagnostic testing, and student assessment).
Professional Growth and Development

The social worker provides leadership in professional growth and development through activities such as the following:
  • Provide training to campuses on behavior management and crisis intervention.
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment.

The social worker exhibits qualities such as the following:
  • Comply with district and campus policies and procedures, as well as state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Comply with the standards of conduct set out in Board Policy DH (Legal) and (Local) and with any other policies, regulations, and guidelines that impose duties, requirements, and standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate a high level of personal integrity, a collaborative leadership style and high ethical standards.
  • Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and campus policies affecting schools.
  • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other required documents.
  • Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of this position.
  • Work with school personnel to help students explore alternative education programs and career counseling.
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of parent involvement activities. Develop and conduct parenting training and support groups.
  • Consult with parents regarding their children's academic performance, behavior, and needs.
  • Serve as consultant to school personnel regarding students or situations that are not referred for direct district or outside services.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

May supervise persons completing practicum or internship through a college or university program.

  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment.
  • May be required under specific circumstances to provide physical restraint of students in danger of causing harm to themselves or others.
  • Occasional district wide and statewide travel.
  • Uses computer for prolonged period resulting in repetitive hand motion.
  • Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination vibration.
  • Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, etc.), work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces.
