Wake Forest University School of Medicine(WFUSM) and Atrium Health are seeking a dynamic national leader with outstanding credentials in clinical and translational research to direct the Animal Resources Program at WFUSM. WFUSM is in a phase of unprecedented growth and evolution. The Director will be responsible for the procurement and care for all animals used in research and / or teaching at WFUSM.

WFUSM is home to nationally and internationally recognized research in Healthy Aging, Alzheimer's Prevention, Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Neurosciences, and Regenerative Medicine.
  • Working with the Vice Dean, Basic and Pre-clinical Science, the Associate Vice President and Assistant Dean, Research Oversight and Support, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), the Director ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • The Director serves as the Attending Veterinarian, with a primary administrative appointment reporting to the Associate Vice President and Assistant Dean for Research Oversight and Support.
  • Holds a faculty cross appointment in the Section of Comparative Medicine, Department of Pathology, with duties and responsibilities that include effort for the teaching and research missions. Serves on section/departmental committees within Comparative Medicine as requested by the Section Head/Department Chair.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
  • DVM or VMD degree from an institution accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
  • Advanced academic training as evidenced by an M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Significant experience with Laboratory Animal Medicine.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:
  • Board Certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Provides oversight of all animal research at Wake Forest University and Wake Forest University School of Medicine for appropriate veterinary medicine and animal husbandry, as well as the ethical care and treatment relating to all animal welfare regulations by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and accreditation standards of the International Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).
  2. Works with the Associate Vice President and Assistant Dean, Research Oversight and Support on new Institutional initiatives regarding the use of animals in biomedical research.
  3. Works with the Associate Vice President and Assistant Dean, Research Oversight and Support, and the Vice Dean Basic and Pre-clinical Science Research, regarding matters of potential security risks regarding animal rights threats, and public relations issues related to the use of animal models.
  4. Advises the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) on matters regarding policies and procedures to ensure research involving the use of animals is consistent with applicable regulatory standards.
  5. Provides guidance to investigators on matters related to IACUC protocols, rules and regulations, animal models, and animal research resources.
  6. Oversees the care of research animals for approximately 200 investigators with over 500 active protocols.
  7. Oversees animal related research needs of investigators for experiments, appropriate animal housing conditions and availability to ARP resource labs, such as necropsy, surgery, etc. as needed to assure appropriate and timely conduct of research.
  8. Establishes the acceptable standards for veterinary medicine for all species used in research at WFUSM.
  9. Works, in conjunction with the IACUC, to maintain accreditation with AAALAC requiring preparation of annual reports, documents for re-accreditation process at three-year intervals, several day site visit, etc.
  10. Together with the IACUC, works to maintain good standing with USDA requiring preparation of annual reports, participating in annual unannounced inspections, and follow-up whenever deficiencies are found; Assures our responsiveness to USDA concerns, and works with Administration on issues requiring budget changes, to alleviate any USDA concerns.
  11. Coordinates with physicians in Employee Health Services to establish standard operating procedures for employees with occupational exposure to animals; Works with same physicians to assure appropriate medical care is provided when and if persons working with animals have contaminated exposures and other health problems that might be related to working with various species.
  12. Participates and coordinates planning of renovations to animal facilities, and new facilities construction as needed, including submitting grant applications to the NIH for facilities improvement and construction funding as needed.
  13. Directs operation of AHWFB centralizes animal facilities which currently includes: Annual operating expenses: ~ $12 million Over 220,000 sq. ft. located on four campuses - Average daily inventory: 13,300 animals; 16 different species, including large nonhuman primate population ~ 3 (FTE) equivalent veterinarian faculty, 17 veterinary professionals, 125 FTE staff
  14. Coordinates activities of all faculty members who devote effort to the ARP for clinical medicine and for veterinary pathology.
  15. Oversees Animal Care Operations Managers, Supervisors, and Staff as well as duties of Training Coordinator and duties of Environmental Enrichment Coordinator - includes continuing education training programs and seminars for staff.
  16. Coordinates efforts of ARP Staff Veterinarians.
  17. Oversees externship and residency programs for clinical medicine and veterinary pathology.
  18. Rotates for clinical medicine duty with other faculty and staff veterinarians, including weekend and holiday duty.
