Essential Functions
• Supervise and develop the Lab team to deliver successfully to the business’ needs.
• Responsible for understanding and training all safety procedures and ensuring that all laboratory activities are completed safely.
• Ensure that all SOPs, and quality and compliance standards are adhered to.
• As needed, create and update SOPs.
• Planning, organizing and prioritizing work schedules in consultation and partnership with Winemaking, Cellar, QC, and Bottling.
• Maintain a high level of communication with internal partners to ensure efficient and effective flow.
• Deliver accurate and timely information to internal partners and external customers.
• Assists in all lab activities when necessary, including but not limited to sampling, maintenance, analysis, and chemical prep.
• Cross train within Quality positions and fill in when necessary.
• Hire and train Lab Technicians and Harvest Interns.
• Responsible for maintaining a clean and tidy working environment.
• Responsible for ordering, maintaining proper inventory, and performing cost analysis of all lab supplies.
• Responsible for approving invoices, billing for lab services, and timesheets.
• Identify and lead process improvement projects that impact quality of products, services, and flow.
• Represent the department internally and externally.

Physical Demands/Qualifications
• Manual dexterity and the ability to operate a computer for long periods of time without experiencing abnormal hand, wrist, or eye strain.
• Must be able to ascend/descend ladders and stairs.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time throughout the workday.
• Must have coordination sufficient to operate various office machines.

Non-Physical Demands/Qualifications
• B.A. or B.S. in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry, Fermentation Science, Food Science, Enology or related fields required.
• 5+ years’ experience leading a lab team or equivalent experience.
• 5+ years’ experience working in a lab performing analysis.
• Intimate knowledge of analyses and equipment. Ability to recognize potential problems and remediate. Ability to troubleshoot most lab equipment.
• Must be team-oriented and self-motivated.
• Must be an excellent problem-solver.
• Must be willing to work flexible, long, and varying hours during harvest.
• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
• Must be able to sufficiently use SharePoint, Teams, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Environmental Conditions
• May be subject to working with a variety of chemicals.
• Will be subjected to working long hours during harvest.
• Will have some work outdoors and subjected to a wide range of weather conditions.

Sustainability Contribution
Supports economic sustainability by performing critical tests on the product to ensure high quality wines.
Supports environmental sustainability by conserving natural resources as well as limiting the use of hazardous chemicals and properly disposing.
