POSITION SUMMARY: Through reflection leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school-based speech-language pathologists provide prevention, assessment, and remediation services for students who exhibit difficulties in the areas of language, speech articulation, voice, and fluency. Effective school-based speech-language pathologists strive to support growth and development in the least restrictive environment, close achievement gaps, and prepare diverse student populations for postsecondary and workforce success. These services are designed to enhance children's academic achievement and help them meet their educational goals.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Planning and Over-site
- Organizes a program that addresses local school speech-language goals.
- Works cooperatively with school personnel to accomplish the goals and objectives of the local education agency.
- Coordinates speech-language services with student services provided by other school personnel.
- Maintains records of the speech-language program and prepares periodic reports as required.
- Adheres to established rules, regulations, laws, and appropriate ethical standards.
- Case manages special education programs for students identified SLI only, including conducting eligibility meetings, triennial reevaluation meetings, annual review meetings and all related paperwork and documentation.
- Have an understanding and awareness of school curriculum and expectations.
- Conducts speech, language, and hearing screenings in a variety of locations.
- Administers formal and informal (ongoing and curriculum-based) assessments.
- Obtains additional diagnostic information from appropriate persons and available records for speech-language purposes.
- Analyzes and interprets information to make recommendations regarding the need for speech-language services.
- Provides appropriate information on an informal or formal basis regarding speech, language programs.
- Supervises undergraduate interns, SLPs in Clinical Fellowship Year, paraprofessionals, and speech language pathology assistants.
- Advocate for all students with disabilities and share knowledge regarding impact of the speech-language impairment upon academics and overall functioning at school, at home, and in the community.
C. Manage and Conduct Therapy- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Colorado Standards in the management of communicative disorders.
- Collaborate and consult with classroom teachers in the management of speech-language impairments.
- Plan evidence-based interventions appropriate for individual students and groups of students
- Use evidence-based methods and techniques appropriate to stated objectives.
- Manage the facilities materials and equipment, including assistive technology, necessary to the delivery of services.
- Adjust intervention strategies based on student performance.
- Promote effective interpersonal relations with students and families.
D. Adhering to Local, State, Federal Regulations and Ethical Practices- Completes procedural documentation appropriately.
- Demonstrates knowledge of statewide testing procedures.
- Abides by professional code of ethics.
- Develops appropriate IEPs based on students' strengths and needs.
- Demonstrates awareness of professional performance in litigious environments.
- Manages time efficiently.
- Engages in continuing education and professional growth activities related to speech-language and education.
- Liaison
- Provide consultation to parents, teachers, and other appropriate school personnel.
- Seek the assistance of teachers, parents, and others to meet the communication needs of students.
- Consult/communicate with non-school agencies to enhance services.
- Make recommendations and referrals for audiological/medical and related services.
- Serve on RtI or other school-based teams as appropriate.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:- Operate the programs in accordance with Federal and State Department guidelines and SCBOCES Board of Directors regulations and policies.
- Attend meetings as required.
- All other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree or higher, Colorado Department of Education-Special Services License with Speech/Language Pathologist endorsement, and American Speech and Hearing Association assessment certification or ASHA certificate preferred.
DESIRED CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge and understanding of school-based services including children 0-21years of age.
Compassion: A sincere desire to help children in a kind caring manner. Without a compassionate and caring nature, success in treating and boding with children will be limited.
Verbal and Written Communication Skills: Must be able to clearly communicate verbally and in writing with a variety of individuals.
Listening Skills: Need to be able to listen to the needs of parents/teachers so that issues will be kept to a minimum. Being able to listen means that more communication gets done in less time.
Teaching Skills: Have a grasp on how to teach students ages 3-21yrs. to perform a task correctly guiding them through steps needed.
Resourceful/Adaptable: Need to think on your feet, improvise and adjust plans at a moment's notice.
Collaborative: Need to communicate and get along with a variety of different people.
