Position Summary This position will be shared between the Virology and Molecular Pathology sections of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. It will include processing and testing of animal specimens for diagnostic purposes using molecular-based assays; organization and analysis of testing data; entry of testing results into laboratory information management system; processing and maintenance of quality control materials; preparation of molecular-based assay reagents; storage and disposal of specimens; operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment; participation in review and revision of standard operating procedures; assistance with assay development and validation. The position duties include... 60.00 Performs laboratory assays and procedures, including confirmatory and quality control testing, to produce results for the health maintenance, diagnosis, and treatment of animals. Identifies and solves technical problems related to this testing. 15.00 Assists with special projects, including assay development and validation. Inventories supplies to maintain a ready supply of laboratory consumables and prepares needed reagents. 10.00 Collects data and reviews paperwork and test results for completeness and accuracy. Enters data for completed testing in the laboratory information system. 5.00 Maintains quality control records and inventory, identifies quality control variances, and resolves quality control issues. Operates, maintains, and calibrates laboratory equipment to provide accurate performance of assays. 5.00 Communicates with clients to provide test results. Provides information that assists clients with sample submission and test interpretation. 5.00 Participates in laboratory problem-solving, policy making, and Standard Operating Procedure writing and revision. Attends staff meetings and participates in VDL activities. Assists in training new staff and cross-training current staff. Minimum Requirements Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a high-volume diagnostic laboratory; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; the job may require specialty certifications, approvals, or training; may require successful completion/continued maintenance of accessibility standards. Desired Qualifications Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four year college degree program in microbiology or a related biological science field; Molecular diagnostic testing experience with nucleic acid extraction and PCR-based procedures including gel-based assays; preparation of samples for sequencing; practical knowledge of next generation sequencing and bioinformatics; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines while maintaining a high quality of work; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; a high level of initiative; experience with laboratory information management systems; excellent written
